Effects and cost-effectiveness of postoperative oral analgesics for additional postoperative pain relief in children and adolescents undergoing dental treatment: Health technology assessment including a systematic review2019In: PLOS ONE, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 14, no 12, article id e0227027Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background There is an uncertainty regarding how to optimally prevent and/or reduce pain after dental treatment on children and adolescents. Aim To conduct a systematic review (SR) and health technology assessment (HTA) of oral analgesics administered after dental treatment to prevent postoperative pain in children and adolescents aged 3-19 years. Design A PICO-protocol was constructed and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42017075589). Searches were conducted in PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, Cinahl, and EMBASE, November 2018. The researchers (reading in pairs) assessed identified studies independently, according to the defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, following the PRISMA-statement. Results 3,963 scientific papers were identified, whereof 216 read in full text. None met the inclusion criteria, leading to an empty SR. Ethical issues were identified related to the recognized knowledge gap in terms of challenges to conduct studies that are well-designed from methodological as well as ethical perspectives. Conclusions There is no scientific support for the use or rejection of oral analgesics administered after dental treatment in order to prevent or reduce postoperative pain in children and adolescents. Thus, no guidelines can be formulated on this issue based solely on scientific evidence. Well-designed studies on how to prevent pain from developing after dental treatment in children and adolescents is urgently needed.

Hur har Brexit påverkat Storbritanniens migrationspolicy och hur har denna förändrats över tid?2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 12 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay examines how rhetoric and migration policy have changed from before and after Brexit. The study is limited to the years 2012-2022. I will analyze whether there is a particular connection between rhetoric and migration policy within the named period. The material that will be analyzed will be the statements concerning migration policy. This will mainly be based on the statements of top politicians.

The theories that will be consumed on my collected material are global neo-institutionalism and the critical juncture theory.

The results indicate that Brexit entailed major institutional changes in migration policy. The result also indicated that Brexit meant that the Conservative Party was moved to pursue a more restrictive and restrained migration policy.

The conclusion is summarized by the fact that Brexit entailed major institutional changes. However, these have not meant reduced migration to Great Britain, which was the aim of the changed migration policy.

    Abstract [sv]

    Problemformulering:

Intervjuerna spelades också in.

    Abstract [sv]

    Cost-effectiveness of caries preventive interventions: a systematic review2021In: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, ISSN 0001-6357, E-ISSN 1502-3850, Vol. 79, no 4, p. 309-320Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVE: The primary purpose of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of caries preventive interventions.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic review was conducted, following the PRISMA Statement. Four electronic databases were searched (final search 16 March 2020). Studies fulfilling the inclusion criteria were independently critically appraised, by two reviewers in parallel. Data from each included study were extracted and tabulated: the analysis used a narrative approach to present the results of the estimated cost-effectiveness.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Twenty-six publications fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were of low or moderate risk of bias. Ten publications were economic evaluations, directly based on empirical studies, and the other 16 were modelling studies. Most of the studies concerned interventions for children and the most common were analyses of fluoride varnish and risk-based programs. Some of the studies showed both reduced cost and improved outcomes, but most studies reported that the improved outcome came with an additional cost. The results disclosed several cost-effectiveness evaluations of caries preventive interventions in the literature, but these target primarily children at high risk. There is a scarcity of studies specifically targeting adults and especially the elderly.

Why the simple act of listening will help us design strong and sustainable post pandemic library services2021In: Liber quarterly: the journal of European research libraries, ISSN 1435-5205, E-ISSN 2213-056X, Vol. 31, no 1, p. 1-8Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In spring 2021, the authors of this article ran staff focus groups to explore stories about the impact of COVID-19 on the librarians who work at Malmö university library. In what way have their work tasks and the work situation changed during the COVID-19 pandemic? What have they learned from the experiences and what do they want to develop after the pandemic? Three strong themes emerged: the digital shift, remote working and the library as place. The findings were that the pandemic has created a reality of remote working and learning in higher education. In designing the future library we need to capitalise on the gains of the digitalisation as well as address the potential issues, including loneliness, isolation and motivation.

    Abstract [en]

The study examines legal guardians' experiences of ineffective and effective digital communication between leisure-time centers and guardians. The aim is to gain insight into guardians' experiences of receiving and understanding digital communication. Factors of influence such as technology, clarity, feedback, adaptation, expectations, and experiences are examined in order to analyze their impact on the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of communication. The results indicate that guardians generally have good opportunities to receive and understand digital communication, despite some challenges. Identified negative communicative factors include inadequate platforms, unclear and limited information, and a lack of regular and relevant communication. The conclusion is that increased knowledge and awareness of guardians' experiences of digital communication and its influencing factors are desirable to benefit both guardians, their children, and the leisure-time centers as an organization.

Climate Change Policy in a Developing Country, How Sustainable is it?: A Case Study of BRAC in Bangladesh2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 14 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sustainability of climate change policy by a transnational non-governmental organization (TNGO) in a developing country. The study specifically focuses on the case of Bangladesh Rural Action Committee (BRAC) and its climate change strategy in Bangladesh. The theoretical framework of the thesis comprises three parts: climate change as a security threat and the issue of survival, the discourse of weak and strong sustainability, and the needed shift towards critical green theory in International Relations. To conduct the analysis, the research utilized the strategic report published by BRAC in 2017. The chosen analytical methods encompass Dryzek's environmental discourse analysis and a simplified taxonomy of neoliberal and green environmental governance. The study found that BRAC's climate change policy in Bangladesh displays both weak and strong sustainability characteristics. However, strong sustainability appears to be more prominent within the organization’s strategies, as they predominantly strive to effect systemic transformation with a long-term orientation.

Transforming Phase of Circular Business Model Innovation in IKEA:A Case Study from Circular Business Ecosystem Perspective2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 13 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Circular economy has gained significant attention in the past decade as a potential solution to address sustainability challenges. Implementing circular business model in the core business operation of a company is referred as circular business model innovation (CBMI). It contains a set of dynamic change processes including visioning, sensing, seizing, and transforming. Among all these phases, transforming phase has been in lack of research. This study examines transforming phase of CBMI in the multinational company IKEA. It adopts the business ecosystem perspective to investigate the specific actions and actors involved in the transform- ing phase of CBMI. The paper employs qualitative research with an in-depth case study method with semi-structured interviews. The aim of this research paper is to contribute to theoretical advancements by enhancing our understanding of the transformative phase of CBMI. The findings offer insights and implications about the opportunities and challenges faced by multinational companies during the CBMI process.

Vem får ligga?: Enhetens handlingsutrymme för sexualitet på LSS-gruppbostäder2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to investigate and analyze how specifically appointed social workers – barnsekreterare work within the foster care with foster placed children and their network and how specifically appointed social workers specifically work with the best interest of the child in their daily work and in relation to attachment theory within foster placement for children and how they prioritize the attachment between children, foster parents and biological parents throughout foster placements. For this essay there will be documented research of the topic and earlier studies, together with the theory done on attachments theory. This essay will also include the point of view of the best interests of the child throughout the text.

Three semi-structured interviews are going to be held with three different specifically appointed social workers within one big city in Sweden. Sixteen open questions are going to be asked which are divided in between the work social workers do with biological parents versus foster parents. The result will then be documented, consisting of quotes from the social workers, a summary of their answers. With the documentation, an analysis will continuously be made with the purpose of finding similarities and differences between the earlier studies made and the answers of each social worker.

From the gathered information and the analysis of the empirical material the conclusion was made that the specifically appointed social workers work very thoroughly with upholding the law stated rights of every individual within the child’s network, but due to the variety of errands and cases it is a constant moral dilemma for most social workers. The importance of the attachment however is something that is never forgotten but modified to best suit the child’s needs within the foster home.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Utmaningarna med språkstörning i SO-undervisningen2023Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Library resilience and leadership in a global crisis2022In: Liber quarterly: the journal of European research libraries, ISSN 1435-5205, E-ISSN 2213-056X, Vol. 32, no 1, p. 1-21Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research Libraries, like other organisations during the COVID-19 pandemic, have been facing difficult choices concerning which services to offer, whilst minimising risk to their staff, communities, and users. As the post COVID-19 era beckons, library leaders are urged to adapt flexible strategic plans that apply to every facet of library operation to ensure the organisations remain both safe and resilient in the future.

This paper discusses leadership skills and practical techniques that can be applied to help build resilient libraries and deliver positive new change in the post-COVID-19 recovery period.

Our findings indicate that leaders need to find ways to realign library ambitions to this uncertain new operating environment. The focus should be directed to digitisation and supporting systems, as well as on sustainability and transformative services. These are a must for the future of libraries.

Antisemitism i klassrummet2023Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Anti-Semitism is a growing problem in society and it shows in schools. Students with aJewish background do not only have to put up with taunts and abuse on a daily basis, but theyalso need to stand up for their Jewish identity when being taught about Judaism and theHolocaust. This essay examines how anti-Semitism expresses itself in the classroom and howteachers work to prevent anti-Semitism. The foundation of the work is to gain anunderstanding of the current subject through students' perceptions and to see what toolsteachers have in their professional role. When we searched for references, our main goal wasto find information that displays the perception from students affected by anti-Semitism andfrom the teachers who teach the subjects in order to find out how the theory works inpractice. We have used various databases such as ERIC via EBSCO, Education ResearchComplete ERC as well as scientific reports and literature to answer our questions. Our resultsshow that teachers feel a lack of material and knowledge to adapt and make changes inteaching. It also appears that Jewish students are exposed to both physical and psychologicalviolence and that they need to hide their Jewish identity in order to feel safe on the schoolgrounds.

Exhibitions as an empowering act in the digital transition: libraries and librarians role as knowledge producers and curators2019Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Digital practices are intertwined in everything we do, although in a society where the citizens are faced with fake news and alternative facts in the media - social as well as traditional - demands are placed on new abilities to debunk myths and pseudoscience. Through the project The Researchers Gallery we, at Malmö University Library, explored the question of how we can address the ways digitalization is transforming behaviours in processing information and knowledge. The essence of the project was the development of a model to co-produce exhibitions with researchers at the University. The co-production was central in empowering librarians involved as well as visitors in their information literacies and understanding of knowledge and facts. In order to document the processes and disseminate the experiences and new knowledge to others, the project group developed a web-based five-step model for sustainable exhibition production. The project is now completed and the activities in The Researchers Gallery continue as part of Malmö University Library’s regular repertoire. In order to develop the Researchers Gallery, and in particular deepen the connection to information literacies needed in a digital setting, we are aiming at creating a digital representation of the exhibitions with interactive components. When it comes to professional development and new competencies discovered through the project, the next step is to start a network for Swedish libraries that want to explore the role of the librarian-curator and communicate research through exhibitions. This paper will present The Researchers Gallery further as well as the project that launched it.

    Abstract [sv]

The University Library as the Credible Place for Research Communication and Information Literacy2018Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In these times where news and facts are challenged and the discussion of knowledge resistance is highlighted, there is an increased need for strengthening the information literacy competencies among students as well as the public in general. At the same time, universities and their researchers have a need for making their research tangible and for communicating it to the surrounding community. In this project, we meet these demands by presenting research in the form of exhibitions in the most accessible place of the University – the library. University libraries in Sweden are used daily by researchers and students as well as the public and they are a possible link in the dissemination of knowledge to society. The foundation of the project is to bridge the boundary between the work of libraries in the area of formal scholarly communication and the activities of research or science communication, i.e. communication not targeting the academic society, but being part of public involvement. The aim is to create enhanced opportunities for research communication in the library space and to bring together the two strands of information literacy work and dissemination of research results performed by librarians. The library is a place for creation and use of academic knowledge as well as an informal learning environment. The focus is this physical setting and the library as a credible place where communication of research in an exhibition is developed in close collaboration between librarians and researchers and in a format that is interactive, attractive and accessible. The idea is to develop the visitors’ (students, researchers, staff, students from other universities and residents in the city etc.) information literacy and foster a critical stance to news and presentations of research findings. The exhibitions are created to encourage continued learning, for example by connecting the theme of the exhibited research to the library collections for further reading. The key to success is the teamwork that is developed with the researchers and the librarians. The collaboration is not only part of creating the exhibitions, but gives unique opportunities and has explicit synergies in terms of furthering other collaborations among the researchers themselves as well as with the library as a whole, facilitating collection development and fostering the librarians’ knowledge of current research at the university. One concrete result of the project is a model for designing sustainable exhibitions in which the possibilities of a new role for the librarian as a curator-librarian and the library as the credible place is explored. A web-based, five-step model is made available for other libraries - of any size and type - that wish to communicate science and research to their users. The five steps include: idea formation, planning, production, exhibition period, closing. Each step includes a description of the stage in the process, a specific checklist, the reflections on insights from the project and further reading.

The processing of a 3d-printed biocomposite: A material driven study conducted in collaboration with Stora Enso2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a material driven study that explores how post-processing of a 3D-printed biocomposite may increase its utility in the public furniture industry. The study thereby aims to contribute insights in material development and inspire a shift in practices that pushes the industry towards a more sustainable design process. By studying theories on sustainable development, biocomposites, and additive manufacturing, the surface defects in large-scale 3D-printing are put in relation to the industry-specific requirements placed on public furnishings. The potentials for the biocomposite to satisfy these demands are assessed using the four actions steps of material driven design. This includes hands-on exploration of several post-processing methods to minimize the material’s distinctive surface roughness. The most effective surface treatment, a combination of subtractive and additive processing, is subsequently applied in a product development phase to exemplify the feasibility of these methods in the context of furniture. This resulted in a design concept which, although a time-consuming process, proves the possibility of post-processing to influence the ability of the material to meet the requirements for public use. The increased material utility achieved in this study should, however, be considered relative to the economic and ecological consequenses associated with biocomposite processing.

Oral health and dental care of older persons: a systematic map of systematic reviews2018In: Gerodontology, ISSN 0734-0664, E-ISSN 1741-2358, no 4, p. 290-304Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVES: To examine the current knowledge on oral health status and dental care of older persons through a systematic mapping of systematic reviews of low or moderate risk of bias. BACKGROUND: Geriatric dentistry covers all aspects of oral health and oral care of older persons. Oral health is part of general health and contributes to a person's physical, psychological and social wellbeing. METHODS: A literature search was performed in three different databases (PubMed, The Cochrane Library and Cinahl) within 12 domains: Dental caries, periodontitis, Orofacial pain and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, mucosal lesions, oral motor function, dry mouth, halitosis, interaction between oral status and other medical conditions, ability to interrelate and communicate, quality of life, ethics and organisation of dental care for older persons. Systematic reviews were identified and scrutinised, highlighting scientific knowledge and knowledge gaps. RESULTS: We included 32 systematic reviews of which 14 were judged to be of low/moderate risk of bias. Most of the domains lack systematic reviews with low or moderate risk of bias. In two of the domains evidence was identified; in institutionalised people aged 65 or older, effective oral hygiene can prevent pneumonia. Furthermore, there is an evidence of a relationship between malnutrition (protein energy-related malnutrition, PEM) and poor appetite and edentulousness. CONCLUSIONS: There is an urgent need for further research and evidence-based knowledge within most domains in geriatric dentistry and in other fields related to oral health and dental care for older persons striving for multi-disciplinary research programmes.

    Abstract [en]

In 2018, Malmö University is celebrating its 20th anniversary with lectures, conferences, popular science talks, debates and exhibitions. In this exhibition, the library presents research from Malmö University’s five faculties. Research is a complex process, which questions, investigates and develops new aspects of the world. In this way, research fields are constantly moving forward. Results are disseminated in many ways, for example through scholarly publication, collaboration, researcher networks or exhibitions. When research findings reach a wider audience, they are presented in a simplified form and often out of context. This means that research findings presented in the media are often misinterpreted. Individual findings are part of a greater whole and are therefore not well suited for news headlines. This exhibition highlights the importance of reviewing information critically and encourages the visitor to think about whether you relate to news with your reason or with your emotions. Malmö University partakes in the VA (Public & Science) campaign #hurvetdudet (Eng.: How do you know that?). The aim of the campaign is to increase the knowledge of politicians and the public about what science is, how it is done, how different research findings can be evaluated and why research-based knowledge is needed as a basis for decisions about the development of society.

All around us sensors collect data, which is analyzed to figure out how to save energy, how much insulin to inject, where the closest rental bike is located, how many people are still inside a building that is on fire… This fast-spreading technology is called the Internet of Things, or IoT for short. People have the power, or do we really? How much do we value our privacy? What internet connected gadgets will help us lead a healthy, sustainable life – and what gadgets will only increase our stress level? When does use become abuse? This exhibition explores how IoT affects people, society and industry. You are welcome to try out IoT through demos and hands-on experiences based on research projects at Malmö University. Research projects in the exhibition: Emergent Configuration for IoT Systems (ECOS+), Smart energy management and security (SEMS), Fair Data, Walk the ward, Dynamic Intelligent Sensor-Intensive Systems (DISS), PELARS project and Busrunner are presented in the "IOTAP-lab"

Forskarnas galleri #6: Gröna vågor och röda stugor2019Artistic output (Unrefereed)
    Abstract [en]

This exhibition places the concept "idyll" into a context of Swedish literary history and popular culture by highlighting works from different periods. The idyll has been, and is, used to express a critique of modernity, by advocate alternative life styles and ways of organizing society. Meet the authors Karl-Erik Forsslund (1872-1941), Vilhelm Moberg (1898-1973) and Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002), the protest singer Bernt Staf (1945-2002) and the blogger Clara Lidström (1986-). These writers all share a number of basic genre traits, and they also illustrate how the idyll as a disrespected genre has adapted itself to the development of popular media outlets – from the novel to the blog via the LP-record. Green waves and red cottages runs during the period of May 9th to October 19th 2019. The exhibition is part of the research project, Back to the homestead. The idyll as a critical and aesthetic discourse in Swedish literature funded by Riksbankens jubileumsfond.

Forskarnas Galleri #7: Fighting cancer with plastic bullets2019Artistic output (Unrefereed)
    Abstract [en]

Cancer is a term used for about 200 different diseases. What they all have in common is that the cells in the body start to divide uncontrollably. In 2018 there were 18 million cancer cases around the world. In Sweden, approximately every third person will be diagnosed with a cancer disease at some point during their lifetime.A major challenge for science is to find ways to diagnose and treat these diseases. At Malmö university a new generation of chemists, physicists and biologists work in two international networks, BioCapture and GlycoImaging. Their research focus on designing plastic antibodies, bullets. The bullets are cheap to produce and aim to detect cancer cells at an early stage.

The two projects are coordinated by Börje Sellergren and Anette Gjörloff Wingren, who train and tutor 19 PhD students. This exhibition highlights the interdisciplinary work of the PhD’s and their importance for the cancer research.
