    Abstract [en]

Background: Legal guardians of children with Anorectal Malformation (ARM) and Hirschsprung’s Disease (HD) express a need of support from pediatric healthcare. Studies demonstrate how communication between home and pediatric care through digital technology increase the legal guardians comfort. Communication through digital technology, such as an application, could be a solution to increase the support for legal guardians of children with ARM and/or HD. Aim: The aim was to illustrate how legal guardians of children with ARM and/or HD experience communication with pediatric care through an application. Method: Qualitative method with an inductive approach. Ten legal guardians of children with ARM and/or HD participated through purposive sampling. Datacollection through follow-up semi-structured interviews after intervention of an application. The interviews were performed after one and two weeks of use of the application. The interview material was analyzed through content analysis. Results: Five final categories emerged from the data analysis: Useful in periods, Complementary mean of communication, Accessibility to pediatric healthcare, To facilitate time management and Support in assessments. Legal guardians experienced the application that was used in this study as useful in periods of leave or discharge to home. On the other hand they experienced that the application was unjustified in periods when the child was feeling well. All of the legal guardians experienced the mean of communication as easy and felt a closer connection to pediatric care. They also felt that the mean of communication gave them the possibility to master their own time. The legal guardians received support in assessments in regards of their child’s treatment through the application and experienced increased comfort in their home.  The legal guardians felt that the application was a good complement for communication with pediatric care but that it could not substitute de physical meeting. Conclusion: Legal guardians of children with ARM and/or HD experience that communication with pediatric care through an application can give them feedback and thus contribute to the support that they previously have been missing in their home.
