SiS mellan tvång och vård: En kontradiktion i utsagor2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the self-proclaimed performance of the National Board of Institutional Care, and its specific youth care homes in Sweden (SiS), concerning SiS work with institutionalised children and youth in relation to law of The Care of Young Persons Act (LVU). Special focus is also given to how the SiS self-assessment contrasts with the accounts given by institutionalised youths. We have investigated SiS claims present on their website since it provides ample documentation, information and deeds, and investigated reports by youth in the media, research and news outlets. We have elected to code all collected data and have thus identified key recurring themes present in youth and SiS reports. We have then regarded these findings with respect to our theories that are presented in the results and analysis section along with previous research. In this section we maintain that the description provided by youths at SiS is problematic and often shows a lack of care giving instances or staff that master the tools required to meet the youth in a constructive manner. In the discussion we once again maintain our theories and methodological approach that is based on Discourse analytical grounds that maintain the importance of language and the messages signified through actions.

    Abstract [en]

This study is about women who suffer from violence in close relationships. The purpose ofthe study is to answer three questions, those are "What difficulties can the social service faceat work and when designing needs-adapted interventions for women who are in a violentrelationship?", "Does the social service have various tools that can be used at work ifdifficulties arise in the work and in the design of needs-adapted support for women exposed toviolence? ” and "How does the law, as a påwer structure, affect social services efforts towardswomen exposed to violence?”. The empirical sources of the study are a handbook for FREDAfrom the National Board of Health and Welfare (2014), a handbook from the National Boardof Health and Welfare (2016), a report from the National Board of Health and Welfare (2018)and a regional handbook from the County Administrative Board (2019). The sources werechosen as the study's empirical data because they are informative and the information coversthe most essential in the study area. A qualitative method is the method the study is based onand the empirical data have been analyzed on the basis of a thematic analysis. In social work, difficulties may arise in the provision of housing to abused women. This is because there maybe a shortage of housing that satisfies women's needs. Even when a woman is offeredfinancial assistance, there is a risk that the violence will not be made visible, which results inthe woman not receiving the right help. Additional difficulties that can arise are when thewoman normalizes the violence and does not tell about it. The social services have varyingmethods in dealing with these difficulties, for example collaboration or through askingquestions with the help of Freda-short question. The intersectional perspective has been usedto understand how the law affects the support offered to abused women. The perspective hasalso been used to understand why categories are essential in social work.

Konsekvenser av individens belastningsregister: En studie om brottsdömdas återintegrering i arbetslivet2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: The study provides a comprehensive overview of how it has become increasingly common in today's job market for employers to request criminal record checks during the hiring process. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine how the criminal record affects the employment prospects of individuals with a criminal background and to analyze the methods identified as effective in supporting individuals who have been denied employment due to their criminal record. Method: To address the study's objectives, a qualitative research approach was chosen, involving content analysis and document analysis. Results: Individuals with a criminal record face greater challenges in reintegrating into the labor market due to the stigmatization and labeling associated with having a criminal record. The results showed that individuals with a criminal record experience social exclusion, discrimination, and stigmatization. Furthermore, the findings indicate that these individuals are indirectly punished even after serving their sentence, as they face limitations in their opportunities for labor market reintegration. Society views them as deviant, further hindering the reintegration of individuals with previous criminal convictions and increasing the likelihood of recidivism. Therefore, it is important to implement strategies and interventions that focus on the rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals with criminal backgrounds into the labor market.

Hälsa för lärande, lärande för hälsa: En studie om elevhälsans arbete för hälsa och välmående2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Student health consists of several professions that together build a team with several professions. The team works to promote students' mental and physical health. The goal for student health is that all participating professions work together to ensure that all students feel involved, valuable and motivated to achieve the official school goals. Depending on how well this teamwork operates, it can either be an enabling or hindering factor for the student's participation in school activities. This study aims to investigate how a student health team can best work to create the sense of context that the school requires both by law and its required values. The study is based on two popular science books about health and unhealthiness in school and a fiction book with a "case description" of two teenage girls from different psychosocial environments feeling mentally ill. The results of the study show that student health teams can function well as there is a clear structure and determination among all participating professions. Some issues the popular science books discussed were the need to focus on health promotion and to provide adequate time for the required preventive work. A further development of this study is recommended to gain an understanding of the individual thoughts in student health and thereby make a comparison with the study that we have done through our interpretation of the literature.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Copingstrategierna delades in i problemfokuserade och emotionsfokuserade.

Vägen till meningsfull sysselsättning2010Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Ensamkommande flyktingbarn: utifrån perspektivet socialt arbete2013Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to highlight the challenges and shortcomings that affect social work related to honor-based issues, which often result in individuals at risk of honor-based violence choosing to remain in oppressive situations, regardless of the consequences. We have conducted semi-structured interviews with social workers who address these problems in various professional roles, including social secretaries, counselors, foster homes, and organizations that work with preventive measures.

Scientific articles, books, and reports were used in the study to gain deeper insight into the subject. The material was analyzed based on intersectionality, systems theory, and anomie theory to gain a more profound understanding of the subject from different perspectives. These perspectives help analyze the factors that contribute to honor-based violence and oppression, and how the interaction between these factors can reinforce honor norms in Sweden.

The results reveal shortcomings in addressing honor-based problems, such as a lack of cooperation, knowledge, and interventions. These deficiencies, among other factors, restrict the opportunities for victims of honor-based violence to escape their destructive situations. The study also underscores limiting factors such as victims' low trust in authorities and insufficient long-term measures following a break-up. The segregation of ethnic groups in Sweden and its consequences is a recurring theme, focusing on how cultural distinctions and segregation can reinforce honor norms in society.

The study also points out a lack of adequate strategies and sufficient knowledge about how to effectively address honor norms within schools and social work, often overshadowed by the fear of being accused of racism. A key conclusion is that more knowledge about the issue is needed, along with the development of interventions for non-emergency cases that are grounded in a deeper understanding of the cultural context. It is also essential that the stigma surrounding terms such as "honor culture" and "honor-related violence" be eliminated, promoting a more productive debate and dissemination of knowledge at different levels, among politicians, in social work, in schools, and among immigrants. Additionally, the study emphasizes the need to improve integration efforts.

Barn till frihetsberövade föräldrar: Intervjustudie med professionella2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Att skapa rummet i rummet: – Om sjukhuskuratorers metoder för relationsskapande i vårdmiljö2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

On the ward, healthcare social workers often speak to patients in rooms without

the possibility of privacy or quiet. The aim of this paper is to examine which

methods healthcare social workers (HSW's) use to build relationships and create a

holding environment in these settings, and how they are used in practice.

Findings from this qualitative interview study show that there are several methods

that HSW’s can use – both physical and verbal. They also employ several methods

to block out disturbances from other patients and personnel, as well as methods to

create safety and predictability in order to establish a holding environment for

patients. These methods are often used together and adapted to each situation. The

group of HSW's interviewed in this study draw knowledge from both education

and practice, and are concordant in their views even though they often work alone.

Barn kan ha brist på ord men de har inte brist på uttryck: Socialarbetares erfarenheter av samtal med tysta barn2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 60 credits / 90 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine social workers’ experiences of communication with silent children, what conservation methods, tools and aids may be used and how the child’s participation thereby can be stimulated. The study was based on two research questions which were following: What affects the child’s silence in conversation along with what conversation methods, aids and what tools can be used in order to engage and include the child? The following study consisted of a qualitative nature and five interviews were conducted with social workers working in different fields. In addition to the interviews, research was sought in order to receive insight into the research area. The search process was not limited to the nation's borders, but consisted of global research. As a result of this, a huge lack of useful research was discovered. The results showed that factors such as social workers’ personal qualities, the character of the methods used and communicative skills had a considerable effect on the child’s motivation and will to participate. Although silent children are common in the conversation room and exist in each area of the social work’s practice, there is no comprehensive research or direct guidelines to mastering such meetings.

Återintegrering i arbetsmarknaden förtidigare dömda personer: En litteraturstudie av strukturella och psykologiska faktorer sompåverkar möjligheterna till anställning och minskat återfall2024Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This comprehensive literature study explores the reintegration of former convicts into society, highlighting key sociopsychological factors. Focused on the application of three pivotal theories: Stigmatisation Theory, Stigmatization Theory, and Social Control Theory, it provides valuable insights into the challenges and dynamics of re-entry. The research elucidates the severe mental health struggles that ex-offenders frequently face, reinforcing the importance of psychological support and interventions in the reintegration process. The Social Control Theory application underscores the role of strong societal ties in reducing recidivism, advocating for sustained social connection support for former convicts. Simultaneously, the exploration of Labeling Theory and Stigmatization Theory sheds light on the societal stigmatization ex-offenders endure, leading to self-fulfilling prophecies and prolonged social exclusion. In summary, this study suggests a holistic approach to reintegration that concurrently addresses individual psychological needs and systemic societal biases. This integrated approach is crucial for the successful re-entry and societal inclusion of ex-convicts, underscoring the need for policy and societal changes.

Al-asadi B, The child perspective in financial assistance. An interview study on how the child's perspective is experienced in the processing of financial assistance. 15 higher education credits. Malmö University: Faculty of health and society, department of social work, 2023.

In 2015, a study was conducted by IVO which indicated that the best interests of the child and the child perspective were poorly documented. However, when making decisions concerning children, the assessment must also take into account the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which became law in 2020. The purpose of the study has therefore been to investigate how social workers, within the unit of financial assistance in Malmö's district, experience the consideration of child perspective into account in their handling after the Convention on the Rights of the Child became law in 2020. Another focus has been to find out what opportunities and limitations may arise from taking the child's perspective into account in decisions and what factors affect the room for manoeuvre. The study has been analyzed based on the theory of room for manoeuvre. With the help of Michael Lipsky's theory of grassroots bureaucrats, context has been created for the work of social workers in order to answer the purpose of the study, I chose to use qualitative studies. The results show shortcomings in the consideration of the child perspective, and it appears that the child perspective is very dependent on the social worker's judgment and will in the room for manoeuvre. In the interviews, the respondents have highlighted difficulties and opportunities with the consideration of the child perspective in the processing. The workload, lack of information, knowledge and the limitation of room for manoeuvre as complexity in the work with the child perspective. Shortcomings in the consideration of the child's perspective are also apparent. A more detailed explanation of this can be found in the results and discussion section.

Medication management in Swedish nursing homes: an ethnographic study of resistance, negotiation and control2022In: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664, Vol. 25, no 2, p. 186-197Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Medication management in elderly care has become a considerable part of the care work. It involves health care professionals, such as registerednurses, formally delegating their tasks to non-professionals, typicall ycare workers. The aim of this article is to explore the medication management in nursing homes for older people. The focus lies on howcare workers and residents interact in relation to the medication management routines. Participant observations were made in seven nursing homes, and the analysis of the empirical material applied the theoretical concepts of local routine culture and materiality. The nursing home residents may try to resist or negotiate the medication management routines, express their reluctance in words or actions, ask questions or make demands. While routines produce institutional bodies, acts of resistance and negotiation may strengthen a person’s sense of self. Medication management affect the relationship between care workers and residents, by enabling interaction. Looking at medication management as a social phenomenon deepens the understanding of how it affects care work and illustrates that in the context of nursing home care, health care and social care are not separate but rather intertwined.

Providing support for family carers: social workers describing their professional role2023In: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, p. 1-11Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Family carers have a growing significance, and they are increasingly regarded as clients in need of support. In Sweden, the municipal support for family carers is often provided by family care advisors. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding this relatively new area of social work practice. This article aims to explore how family care advisors describe their work and construct their professional role in relation to family carers. The empiric material derives from a research circle, a form of focus group interview, with family care advisors. The theoretical framework is based on the concept categorical pair, where the description of the family care advisors’ work includes constructing themselves as professionals and the family carers as clients. Four themes have emerged in their stories: being neutral, being allies, being a container, and being an educator. The findings show how the family care advisors’ relationship with the family carers is described as being simultaneously personal and professional: a form of professional friendship with a delicate balancing act. The family care advisors also view their neutral role, with no power to exercise authority, as important and required. Family carers that are perceived as difficult are described from a paternalistic perspective, thus needing to be educated by the family care advisors. Accordingly, when the family care advisors construct their professional role, they also construct family carers, which includes implicit moral notions of a ‘good carer’.

Ambivalence among staff regarding ageing with intellectual disabilities: Experiences and reflections2021In: Journal of Intellectual Disabilities, ISSN 1744-6295, E-ISSN 1744-6309, Vol. 25, no 2, p. 192-209Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study explores the experiences and reflections of staff in intellectual disability (ID) services concerning ageing with ID. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 24 staff members in group homes and daily activity centres. The findings showed that the staff were uncertain about the signs of ageing in people with intellectual disabilities; they compared the life conditions of these people with conditions in older people without intellectual disabilities. Their emphasis on an active lifestyle was very strong. The staff members also mentioned uncertainty about how to facilitate assistive devices and whether ‘ageing in place’ was the best solution. The overall theme was manifested as ambivalence where notions of older people with intellectual disabilities seemed incompatible with notions of old age in general and could be explained by the theoretical concept of age coding. The findings of this study indicate the need to provide education about ageing to staff working in ID services.

    Abstract [en]

The subject of this study deals with the work of social workers with unaccompanied

children. The problem is presented from a perspective where statistics show that a large

proportion of unaccompanied children are compulsorily cared for in youth care for

problems such as substance abuse, crime and vagabondage. The study's hypothesis is

insofar as there is a problem in the performance of the social services regarding their

assignment towards unaccompanied children. Based on the problem, the purpose of the

study is to investigate whether social workers experience a problem or obstacle in their

work with unaccompanied children in relation to social workers' assignments and

professional role, and what factors may have an obstacle. The essay has therefore been

carried out according to a qualitative methodology and includes semi-structured

interviews with three social workers that describe their experiences of working with

unaccompanied children. The conclusions show that the main problems that social

workers experience in their work with unaccompanied children are time pressure and a

    high workload.

Kriminalitet bland unga: En studie om kopplingen mellan socioekonomisk utsatthet och unga kriminella2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There are many risk factors for youth regarding the development of a criminal behaviour. The purpose of this study is to examine how youth from families with low socio-economic status have a bigger risk of becoming criminals because of their low socio-economical background. The study is mainly focusing on the risk factor; low socio-economics and risk factors that are related to low socio-economics such as housing conditions and school. It’s a literature study that is based on previous research that is going to be interpreted by two different criminological theories. To give the reader an overall picture we are going to examine other risk factors as well. The result of the study shows that low socio-economics is an undeniable risk factor for developing a criminal behavior. It also shows that the residential area and the structural organization in the residential area can have a huge impact on the youth living there. Many times the whole area is a low socio-economic area which previous studies show is a usual risk factor. Meanwhile the structural organization in a residential area can sometimes make a risk factor while in other areas, it can be a protective factor, depending on how the structural organisation looks. The result also shows that children and youth in schools in these low socio-economic areas, present lower grades than the ones in other neighbourhoods. School results play a big role in the development of a criminal behaviour - low results are a big risk factor while good results can be a protective factor.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the experiences of social workers regarding the ongoing impact of digitalization on the administration of economic assistance within social services. The literature presented discusses how digitalization influences social workers and clients in the current workplace. Additionally, the study analyzes factors that have proven

particularly demanding for social workers in relation to digitization. The discourse regarding whether or not increased digitalization within social service is beneficial or detrimental is further explored by applying theories such as Lean and New Public Management (NPM), along with the theoretical concept of transparency.

The effects of digitalization on economic assistance introduce characteristics and conditions that align well with these two theoretical perspectives. The implementation of NPM and Lean has notably influenced working methods in the public sector, leading to the establishment of new standards and approaches in the field. Through the application of these theories, the thesis aims to formulate an opinion on whether digitalization constitutes a positive transformation in the nuanced tasks of social workers or if it represents a new challenge and increased workload. The thesis seeks to analyze and comprehend the role of digitization as either a facilitating factor for the work of social workers or as a new aspect that adds to the workload within the organization.

Vikten av ekonomiskt bistånd till våldsutsatta kvinnor: En intervjustudie av socialsekreterares upplevelser och erfarenheter2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Author 1/Almberg, M. & Author 2/ Lövendahl, S.Supervisor: Johan NordgrenAssessor: Mats HögströmTitle: How was it? Experiences of growing up with addictive parents [Hur var det? Malmö University: Faculty of Health and Society, Department of Social work, 2023.

The aim of this study was to analyze living conditions of children growing up with parents with substance abuse problems, by reading seven autobiographies written by adult children and examining research on this subject. Using conventional content analysis as a method, we especially wanted to look at the similarities and differences between different authors way of describing theirchildhood, depending on backgrounds and social status.

This study identified four themes in the autobiographies: Exposure, Positioned, Closeness and Distance and Strategies. These themes were present in all seven books and it is from them the theories were chosen to better understand them. The theories being Family System Theory, a version of General System Theory, Attachment Theory and theories about Resilience and Coping Strategies.

We found that more recent research on the subject of children with parents struggling with abuse, aim to change the historical portrait of passive victims in need of protection, instead of understanding these children's expressions ofagency. This study has therefore attempted to do the same and from this perspective get a wider understanding of different ways professionals within the field of social work can identify, approach and be of help to children growing up around problems with abuse.

    Abstract [en]

The legislation should be gender neutral, and should not have a gender bias, but it does happen that the court takes decisions based on gender stereotypes and norms. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate if there are any gender constructions in the Care of Young Persons Ac, to highlight these possible differences between how boys and girls get judged according to article 3 in the law and also on what grounds the girls and boys are taken into custody. The thesis is based on 28 judgements from the Administrative court of appeal in Sweden. The first question that is answered in the thesis is how girls and boys are represented or written about in the judgements regarding article 3 in the Care of Young Persons Act. The second question that is answered is on what grounds these children are taken into compulsory care and if these grounds differ on the basis of gender. Gender theory is the theoretical framework in this thesis and is applied on the judgements. The results in this thesis show that there are certain differences between how boys and girls are judged according to article 3 in the Care of Young Persons Act. The analysis of the 28 judgements show that the differences can be that girls are taken into compulsory care based on descriptions of their sexuality. Their mental illnesses and emotions are more highlighted in the judgements. The results found that there are more boys taken into compulsory care and they are more involved in criminality and have violent behaviour and a heavier drug addiction compared to the girls. The gender differences could mostly be seen in statements made by the social welfare board in the judgements and in some statements made by the Administrative court of appeal when they described the “vagabonding” lifestyle of the girls.

    Abstract [sv]

This study analyses how the need of the abused women is interpreted, renegotiated, and adapted in order to be handled accordingly in the organization of the social services. The general question at issue in the study is to uphold the needs and efforts, the meaning of organization performed by the social workers and the significance of social workers capacity and limitations. The study is founded on qualitative analysis of governmental propositions, interviews with social workers and with woman that has been subjected to violence in close relationships. The social workers interpretation is shown to play a central role in proceeding on that kind of support the abused women receive. Furthermore, the study also explains that the needs expressed by abused women are often complex and there is a huge variation in type of need they express. This study will not give any answer in term of quantitative view, however it will give examples of how different the cases can be and the difference of type of needs expressed by abused women in close relationships.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to examine the discourse in Swedish newspapers  around financial aid and financial aid recipients. Furthermore it is of interest to examine what consequences this discourse could mean for the individuals in question. The method used to answer the purpose of this paper is critical discourse analysis. After reading the newspaper articles three themes were identified. The analysis was split up into three themes which were that Malmö is a generous city, referencing the amount they pay out in financial aid, that the discourse revolved around unemployment and unemployment programs and mentions of foreign-born individuals. Each theme was analyzed with Fairclough’s three dimensional model. The results show that financial aid recipients are stigmatized. There is limited discussion in Swedish newspapers about the limitations and opportunities that financial aid seekers face. This is because the articles in the newspaper are using statistics and official reports to criticize politicians, socialworkes as well as the financial aid recipients.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to understand and theorize the phenomenon of honor andhonor-systems. Honor-systems has been a widely discussed theme by different outsources.Throughout the last 20 years there has been many cases of murders rooted in the preservationof one’s honor and reputation. To understand the different factors behind honor-system,relevant theories have been carefully selected to fit the theme and direction of this study. Thechoice of method for this paper has been a qualitative literature study where the author hasexamined previous papers, reports, and other relevant studies to get an understanding of thesubject. Then the result was analyzed by two theories, a cultural theory, and a theory ofintersectionality. While researching the subject of honor-system, it has become clear that thefield of honor-systems is a researched field, there are multiple reports on the matter. Insummary the result showed that in honor-systems the biggest victim is often, women as theyare both the victim of violence and control and as the same time perpetrators. In differentcultures there are different expectations on females and males, and in in honor-systems thesystem is run as a patriarchal one. There were some key differences between the two theorieswhen trying to understand honor-systems and especially when trying to understand a culturesimpact on the individual. It has become clear that the systems of honor affect many people insociety.

Early Intervention for Disabled Children in Russia: A Multidisciplinary Approach2008Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This book is a result of a Russian-Swedish cooperation between the St Petersburg Early Intervention Institute and Ersta Sköndal University College, Stockholm. The framework of this cooperation has been a project financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sida. The theme of the book is early intervention for children with disabilities, which is an advancing field of knowledge in Russia and other post-Soviet countries, rapidly catching up with clinical standards in Western Europe and the United States but still facing serious challenges from predominant clinical traditions and general attitudes towards handicapped children. A serious continuing problem, which early intervention efforts aim to overcome, is the prevailing system of institutional care for children in Russia, taking children from their parents and seriously limiting their chances of development. Through inter-professional work – assessments, habilitation programs and psychosocial support – early intervention aims to help children develop within their family contexts and, thus, help them to become included in a normal social life. The work of the St Petersburg Early Intervention Institute has pioneered this field in Russia. The book gives examples of professional perspectives and methods in dealing with disabled children and their parents. It also shows the context – political, social and professional – in which early intervention in Russia operates.

Seeking safety: a focus group study of young adults' cannabis-related attitudes, and behavior in a state with legalized recreational cannabis.2020In: Harm Reduction Journal, E-ISSN 1477-7517, Vol. 17, no 1, article id 92Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Only July 1, 2017, Nevada became the fifth US state to allow the legal sale of recreational cannabis products for adults ages of 21 and over. This study investigates young adults' cannabis-related attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors in a state where recreational and medical cannabis use was recently legalized.

METHODS: We conducted 8 focus groups stratified by cannabis use (regular users, occasional users, and nonusers) with 32 college students ages 18 to 24. Data were analyzed using the inductive qualitative thematic analysis method.

RESULTS: Four themes emerged during analyses: "sort of legal," "mitigating harm through legalization," "Increasing acceptance," and "seeking safety when purchasing cannabis." Despite their limited knowledge of cannabis regulation, the majority of the participants supported recreational cannabis legalization from a harm reduction perspective. Most participants did not believe that cannabis legalization had affected their use behavior. However, participants, especially cannabis users, perceived that recreational cannabis legalization created a context where cannabis use was legally, socially, and behaviorally "safer" than in an illegal context, even for those below the legal age of sale.

CONCLUSIONS: Most studies focus on the role of perceived health risk on cannabis use. If there are population-level long-term effects of recreational cannabis legalization on use behavior, findings suggest that they will be mediated by the perceived legal, social, and behavioral risk of using cannabis.

Bedtime stories from inside - family practices and affinities in families with incarcerated fathers2023In: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664, Vol. 26, no 2, p. 218-229Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present paper aims to explore whether a prison literacy project, Bedtime stories from inside, can contribute to improving and maintaining relationships between incarcerated fathers and their children. The analysis is focused on the concepts "doing family" and "affinities". The material consists of anonymous evaluation forms from the incarcerated fathers (70) and the carers (46). The results show that deeper familial connections are possible when fathers are allowed to interact with their children in a way that includes attending to practicalities like reading fairy tales to their children. The family practices within the project contribute to challenging norms of masculinity and overcoming impulses to shut down emotionally. The project highlights the need for the prison system and social work practice to support families in the hard work of forming and maintaining connections.

Att förebygga ANDT-bruk, främja psykisk hälsa och social inkludering hos unga vuxna i migration: Utvärdering av tre särskilt utlysta ANDT-utvecklingsprojekt2021Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Projektet TB for YOU har genomförts av föreningen Tegelbruket i Örebro.

Validation of the Alcohol-Related Sexual Consequences Scale in Swedish University Students2023In: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, ISSN 1661-7827, E-ISSN 1660-4601, Vol. 20, no 2, article id 1035Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Alcohol-related sexual consequences are common in college students. A newly developed 41-item Alcohol-Related Sexual Consequences Scale has recently been evaluated in at-risk young adults in the U.S. The current study aims to validate the Scale in Swedish college students. Methods: The occurrence of alcohol-related sexual consequences was assessed by birth gender, relationship status, gender identity/sexual orientation, and age. Negative binomial regression was used to assess convergent and divergent validity. Results: On average, 5.4 (SD 5.1) alcohol-related sexual consequences were experienced past three months. Greater scores were reported in singles, LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning), and younger students. All sex-related covariates showed robust associations with alcohol-related sexual consequences while most alcohol-related covariates were not associated (e.g., convergent validity). All alcohol-related covariates showed robust associations with alcohol consequences while most sex-related covariates were not associated (e.g., divergent validity). In the full model predicting alcohol-related sexual consequences, being a woman, single, and younger were identified as independent predictors. Conclusions: This newly developed scale assessing alcohol-related sexual consequences could be used in both epidemiological studies and intervention studies targeting at-risk students.

To What Extent did Social Media and Communication Strategies Help Victims of Domestic Violence During the COVID-19 Lockdown in Thailand?: A Case Study of the "Stop Violence Against Women Campaign"2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the midst of the formidable challenges imposed by the COVID-19 lockdown, the "Stop Violence Against Women" campaign emerged as a resilient and proactive response, harnessing the influential capabilities of social media and strategic communication to combat the pervasive issue of gender-based violence in Thailand. This comprehensive study, deeply rooted in the realms of public sphere theory, development theory, and digital activism, explores the multifaceted dimensions of the campaign's profound impact. Through an extensive examination of its strategies, narratives, and outcomes, this research illuminates how the campaign adeptly leveraged social media platforms to heighten awareness, promote inclusivity, and empower victims during a period of elevated vulnerability.

In pursuit of a holistic comprehension, this study navigates the theoretical foundations that steered the campaign's conception and implementation. Within the contours of public sphere theory, the campaign effectively transformed digital spaces into virtual town squares, where individuals could congregate, deliberate, and amplify their voices on the pressing issue of gender-based violence. Through compelling visuals, strategic hashtags, and resonant narratives, the campaign transcended geographical boundaries, nurturing empathy, and galvanizing action within a global audience.

Inclusivity stood as a central tenet of this endeavor, intricately interwoven with the campaign's strategic alliances and dialogues involving diverse stakeholders. By amplifying marginalized voices and orchestrating participatory development, the campaign evolved into a dynamic crucible, where diverse perspectives converged to drive profound societal transformation. The campaign's harmonious engagement with development theory further fortified its impact, addressing not only the social but also the economic repercussions of gender-based violence while fostering a participatory ecosystem wherein survivors, allies, and advocates coalesced in unity.

At the heart of this transformative narrative lies digital activism—a paradigm of empowerment that united stakeholders in a harmonious symphony of awareness, empathy, and advocacy. In alignment with the principles of public sphere theory, digital activism emerged as an influential force for socio-political change, transcending the confines of the virtual realm to manifest tangible policy shifts and instigate societal change.

This study diligently uncovers not only the campaign's remarkable accomplishments but also the challenges it encountered, providing valuable insights into the intricacies of harnessing social media and communication strategies to combat gender-based violence. Woven together through a rich tapestry of theoretical frameworks, narratives, and strategies, the "Stop Violence Against Women" campaign stands as an enduring testament to the compelling impact of theory-infused activism, engendering profound transformations in the domain of gender-based violence awareness and prevention.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this literature study is to examine girls with autism and their school situation in Sweden. The study will therefore look at the girls' difficulties, possibilities and support when within the school environment. The present problem within the study theme is that there is a lack of research when it comes to the subject of girls with autism within the Swedish schools. Previous studies have shown that many students with autism in Sweden do not reach the knowledge goals during primary school and the schools do not adjust enough to the needs of the students with autism. Through using a qualitative method I do a deeper analysis of this specific subject group to see if I can find any reasons behind the problems surrounding them. The results of this study show that the schools do not have enough knowledge about what the diagnosis of autism means, specifically for the girls, or how to handle them correctly. In general the girls feel worse in comparison to the boys with autism when it comes to physical and psychological health. The girls also get less of the type and amount of support from school than boys with autism do. In conclusion I hope to bring awareness of the girls' situation and hope that my study can help encourage further studies about this subject.

Brottsutvecklingen i Skåne, en introduktion2007Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Ett diskussionsunderlag2007Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Architecture for defying exclusion of people with disabilities: Swedish accessible housing revisited2019In: ALTER, 8th conference European Society for Disability Research: HISTORIES, PRACTICES AND POLICIES OF DISABILITY.INTERNATIONAL, COMPARATIVE AND TRANSDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVES, Cologne, Germany // 5 & 6 September 2019, 2019Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Barriers in the built environment exclude people with disabilities from participating independently in the surrounding society. Since the mid-1960s, architectural designs have been subject to special regulations in the Swedish building code, originally focusing on access for wheelchair users to public buildings. In the mid-1970s, this focus converged with the first Swedish disability policy and “accessibility for people with locomotory or cognitive problems” of the building code was coined. Building initiatives by organisations in defence of the rights of people with disabilities and documentaries of living conditions for this group prepared for this development. The present study revisits two cases of the 1950s and 1960s that opened for a rethinking of architectural and residential space for frail older people and appropriate housing for young people with mobility impairments. The study uses close reading and critical analyses of textual documentation in combination with spatial analyses of drawings to retrace the awaking among Swedish architects of the need of accessibility in the built environment (Brummett 2010, Lefebvre 1985, Miles and Hubermann 1994). The study suggests that accessible architecture requires user involvement and participatory processes to conceive spatiality that is usable by people with disabilities. At the same time, consultation with people disabilities about design aspects promoting accessibility is threatened by the current Swedish housing crisis and allegations that accessibility requirements would increase building costs.

Architecture for the silver generation: exploring the meaning of appropriate space for ageing in a Swedish municipality2011In: Health and Place, ISSN 1353-8292, E-ISSN 1873-2054, Vol. 17, no 2, p. 572-587Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper focuses on an architecture competition for the silver generation, namely those aged 65 years and older. Twenty-seven Swedish informants were interviewed using an interviewing guide that included a photographic survey. The informants emphasised aesthetic dimensions in architecture for the prolongation of ageing in place and independent living in a residential home. This study highlights the individual adjustment of space, and the integrated location in existing urban settings near nature. Based on the findings, a habitational model for exploring the appropriate space for ageing is formulated. It suggests that architecture through location and spatial features needs to generate positive associations with the users.

Using building requirements as a means to create inclusion: Accessibility and usability at a crossroads2022In: Accessibility Denied: Understanding Inaccessibility and Everyday Resistance to Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities / [ed] Hanna Egard, Kristofer Hansson, David Wästerfors, London: Routledge, 2022, 1, p. 185-209Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter contemplates the evolution of minimum requirements for accessibility and usability in the built environment in Sweden and its relationship with the new disability policy introduced in 2017. With the development of Swedish functionalist architecture, minimum requirements were developed as complementary to a broader study conducted in the 1930s, on the fit between users and different spaces in the home, financed by a national disability organisation. Part of the welfare goals of the state, the requirements were soon integrated into the Swedish building act and implemented through a housing loan system. Following the development of the national disability policy, the requirements evolved into the concept of accessibility which regulated architectural design for housing and public buildings. With the reform to the building act, however, these requirements went from being detailed and mandatory to becoming a mandatory functional requirement which is open to interpretation. The Swedish building market has criticised the requirement as a cost-generating factor and part of the reason for the ongoing housing shortage crisis. Receptive to these claims, Swedish governments during 2014–2021 have allowed changes to the building act and appurtenant legislations which place the responsibility for realising accessibility and usability requirements into the hands of the building market. At the same time, the national disability policy has introduced universal design as the new objective for removing obstacles to the inclusion of people with disabilities.

Dödlig överdos skedde ofta utan person nära som kunde ingripa: Kunskap om närvaron av vittnen är betydelsefull för hur naloxonprogram bör utformas2022In: Läkartidningen, ISSN 0023-7205, E-ISSN 1652-7518, Vol. 119, no 4-5, article id 21121Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Fatal opioid overdoses usually occur without anyone being present and able to intervene. Knowledge of the presence of witnesses is important for how naloxone programs should be designedDrug mortality has increased in Sweden during the 2000s. The vast majority of deaths are opioid overdoses. The National Board of Health and Welfare recommends that the antidote naloxone and a brief overdose education should be offered to people who are at risk of opioid overdose. A retrospective registry study of 193 forensically examined fatal opioid overdoses in Skåne showed that over 80 percent occurred in private residences, most often the deceased’s own home. Other people were present in just over 40 percent of the 193 deaths, but usually in another room or asleep. In most cases, the witnesses were friends, partners, parents, or other people close to the deceased. Naloxone programs should be expanded to include family members and other persons who are close to opioid users, and who therefore may witness or be present early in case of an overdose.

SKA VI GÅ PÅ DEJT?: EN STUDIE OM AUTISM OCH DEJTING2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Tidiga insatser tros påverka förutsättningarna senare i livet i social interaktion i tex dejtingsammanhang. Informanter identifierade hinder i dejtingsammanhang i form utav prestationsångest, brist på bra balans i samtal, linda in saker i "socialt fluff".

    Abstract [en]

Studies and reports have shown that a significant portion of young individuals with intellectual disabilities who complete their studies at special needs upper-secondary school find themselves outside the labor market. Among these, a considerable number are described as being somewhere else, i.e., not in employment, education, or daily activities. This is despite Sweden, through the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Ds 2008:23), acknowledging their right to work on equal terms as others. The aim of this essay is to highlight the underlying reasons why young individuals with intellectual disabilities are excluded from the labor market and the reasons they find themselves in NEED (Not in Employment, Education, or Daily Activity). In a non-systematic literature review, twelve scientific articles found through PsycInfo and Libsearch were examined to address the challenges and opportunities that young individuals with intellectual disabilities face in relation to employment and work. The results were then analyzed based on theories of stigma, social justice, and developmental ecology. The findings primarily point to three reasons why young individuals with intellectual disabilities are excluded from labor markets and are in NEED: 1. stigmatization of the group, 2. structural barriers such as a complex welfare system and limited educational opportunities, and 3. difficulties in participating in today's work structure due to limited adaptive abilities.

MED ALKOHOLEN SOM FÖLJESLAGARE: LIVSVILLKOR, LIVSKVALITET OCH FRISKFAKTORER FÖR ÄLDRE PERSONER MED ETT PROBLEMATISKT ALKOHOLBRUK GENOM LIVET2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
