    Abstract [en]

    The problem of contact deformation of an elastic body loaded by gravitational forces and laying on several small rigid supports is considered in the framework of the linear theory of elasticity. Using the method of matched asymptotic expansions, the limit asymptotic model for determining the support reactions and the kinematic parameters of the body settling is derived. The effect of the body surface reinforcement is discussed. The case of a uniform (symmetric) settling is considered in detail.

    Abstract [en]

    The rapidly evolving Internet of Things (IoT) systems demands addressing new requirements. This particularly needs efficient deployment of IoT systems to meet the quality requirements such as latency, energy consumption, privacy, and bandwidth utilization. The increasing availability of computational resources close to the edge has prompted the idea of using these for distributed computing and storage, known as edge computing. Edge computing may help and complement cloud computing to facilitate deployment of IoT systems and improve their quality. However, deciding where to deploy the various application components is not a straightforward task, and IoT system designer should be supported for the decision.

    To support the designers, in this thesis we focused on the system qualities, and aimed for three main contributions. First, by reviewing the literature, we identified the relevant and most used qualities and metrics. Moreover, to analyse how computer simulation can be used as a supporting tool, we investigated the edge computing simulators, and in particular the metrics they provide for modeling and analyzing IoT systems in edge computing. Finally, we introduced a method to represent how multiple qualities can be considered in the decision. In particular, we considered distributing Deep Neural Network layers as a use case and raked the deployment options by measuring the relevant metrics via simulation.

    Abstract [en]

    Water-filled mining goaves are extremely prone to water inrush accidents in coal mines, and the transient electromagnetic method (TEM) is a good geophysical method for detecting water-rich areas. Considering that conventional TEM was mainly carried out on the ground, to increase the detection resolution, the underground TEM was used to detect the water-filled goaves in this study. Based on the whole-space model, the data-processing method of the underground TEM was studied. The whole-space geoelectric model was established based on actual coal-measure strata data, and the whole-space TEM response of the water-filled goaves was modeled using the finite-difference time-domain method. The results showed that the low-resistance areas of the apparent resistivity contours can accurately reflect the water abundance of the mining goaves. The underground TEM was used to detect the water abundance of the mining goaf in a mine environment and its detection results were consistent with the actual results.

    Under året 2020 insågs det att det finns bristande kunskap om vad som krävs för att kunna hålla elektroniklaborationer på distans. Trotts en pandemi så fick de nya ingenjörsstudenterna komma till universitetet för att utföra sina elektroniklaborationer. Detta har lett till denna studie som undersöker vad som krävs av en applikation för att kunna användas på elektroniklaborationerna på Malmö Universitet samt vilka applikationer som kan uppfylla dessa krav. Det finns två olika sorters applikationer som används, simulatorer och fjärrlaboration. Endast simulatorer testades i denna studie. Det utfördes en komparativ studie som använde sig av olika metoder. För att samla information om elektronikkursen och applikationerna så används metoderna intervju, specifikations granskning och en två delad fallstudie. Intervjun utfördes med de två lektorerna i kursen DA215A. Metoderna resulterade i kvalitativa data om 6 applikationer varav 5 är lämpliga att använda för introducerande laborationer och endast en är lämplig för avancerade laborationer. För att komma fram till dessa 6 applikationer undersöktes 23 olika simulatorer och fjärrlaboration. Applikationerna visade alla egna fördelar vilket leder till att syftet för att implementera en applikation i en kurs bör vara tydligt för att välja den applikation som passar syftet bäst.

    Abstract [en]

    Several techniques are available for constraint satisfaction problems. Most of them lack real time capability and distributed computational properties. Configuration of complex systems has today become a competitive edge, e.g. within e-business. The other side of the same coin can be used for diagnosis and simulation of safe critical applications. This paper gives a scientific background and comparison of methods for constraint satisfaction problems implemented in real time environment. Especially, the technique and its features of the array-based logic will be illustrated by three examples. The examples are: 1.Modelling and simulation of system wide protection applications of power systems 2.Modelling, simulation and implementation of safe critical switching in power systems 3.Modelling, simulation and implementation of safe critical systems of automatic train control Array-based logic is a novel technology, which is founded on a geometrical representation of logic in terms of nested data arrays. In this representation, logical inferences are executed on finite domain systems by a few standardised array operations. In computational practice, array-based logic makes it possible to solve large-scale constraint problems with combinations very efficiently. The major advantages of the technology are completeness, compactness, and speed of simulation (real-time capability), all of which derive from intrinsic properties of the underlying geometrical model. A system in array-based logic is considered analogously to electrical networks and is thus described by the constraints of the isolated elements as well as the constraints of the interconnected elements (the system topology). All system constraints are eliminated in accordance with the methods known from electrical network theory and other engineering disciplines rooted in classical physics. The configuration space is represented explicitly in terms of nested data arrays and the system can therefore be simulated in real-time by co-ordinate indexing on these arrays. This data driven approach makes it suitable for parallel processing, which is an important quality for distributed systems.

    The world is gearing towards renewable energy sources, due to the numerous negative repercussions of fossil fuels. There is a need to increase the efficiency of power generation, transmission, distribution, and use. The proposed work intends to decrease household electricity use and provide an intelligent home automation solution with ensembled machine learning algorithms. It also delivers organized information about the usage of each item while automating the use of electrical appliances in a home. Experimental results show that with XGBoost and Random Forest classifiers, electricity usage can be fully automated at an accuracy of 79%, thereby improving energy utilization efficiency and improving quality of life of the user.

    Abstract [en]

    Object detection is a critical task in computer vision with applications across various domains, ranging from autonomous driving to surveillance systems. Despite extensive research on improving the performance of object detection systems, identifying all objects in different places remains a challenge. The traditional object detection approaches focus primarily on extracting and analyzing visual features without considering the contextual information about the places of objects. However, entities in many real-world scenarios closely relate to their surrounding environment, providing crucial contextual cues for accurate detection. This study investigates the importance and impact of places of images (indoor and outdoor) on object detection accuracy. To this purpose, we propose an approach that first categorizes images into two distinct categories: indoor and outdoor. We then train and evaluate three object detection models (indoor, outdoor, and general models) based on YOLOv5 and 19 classes of the PASCAL VOC dataset and 79 classes of COCO dataset that consider places. The experimental evaluations show that the specialized indoor and outdoor models have higher mAP (mean Average Precision) to detect objects in specific environments compared to the general model that detects objects found both indoors and outdoors. Indeed, the network can detect objects more accurately in similar places with common characteristics due to semantic relationships between objects and their surroundings, and the network’s misdetection is diminished. All the results were analyzed statistically with t-tests.

    In the electronic packaging and energy storage sectors, the study of Cu 6 Sn 5 intermetallic compound (IMC) is getting more attention. At temperatures above 186 °C, this IMC exists in a hexagonal closed packed (HCP) crystalline structure. Crystal plasticity finite element simulations are performed on Cu 6 Sn 5 IMC by taking the information about its lattice parameters and direction dependent elastic properties. Three types of models corresponding to deformations in basal, prismatic and pyramidal modes are developed. With the same type of loading in the elastic regime and boundary conditions, the results of the computations reveal the differences in displacement magnitudes among the three model types.

    The increasing demand for electrical energy and the decreasing supply of fossil fuels in recent years have increased the cost of electrical energy. So that the culture of saving electrical energy is a habit that must be cultivated in the community. On the other hand, energy-saving behavior cannot be realized massively without a support system that can control energy use. With these concerns, it is necessary to develop a method that encourages a culture of saving electrical energy. This paper proposes a system that supports active energy efficiency methods that can support an energy-efficient culture. This system is an electric power monitoring system that is integrated with a smart electrical panel that continuously monitors the use of electrical energy and can control electrical loads automatically, record electricity usage, provide comprehensive reports and analyze energy usage. The method used to carry out this research is research and development. This research has produced a prototype of electrical power control and monitoring system that has a smart panel based on a raspberry PI 3 and PZEM-004t power energy meter. The monitoring system performs and executes automatic control of electrical loads. The system can also provide reports in the form of data monitoring in daily, weekly, monthly or annual period. From the test results, it can be concluded that the system can work well. This research is expected to contribute to providing a system that can support government efforts in saving energy. © Pakistan Academy of Sciences.

    Geo-location white space spectrum databases (GL-WSDBs) are currently the preferred technique for enabling spectrum sharing between primary users and secondary users or white space devices (WSDs) in the very-high frequency (VHF) and ultra-high frequency (UHF) bands. This is true because technologies for making low-cost WSDs capable of autonomous sensing and detection of available white space (WS) spectrum are not yet feasible. This paper reviews the necessary enabling technical conditions to allow coexistence of primary and secondary systems in the VHF and UHF spectrum through a GL-WSDB approach. The practical implementation of South Africa's first GL-WSDB was performed. Results of WS channels available from five cities in South Africa calculated from the implemented GL-WSDB was compared with a commercially available GL-WSDB and was found to be 68% similar. Additionally, results from the implemented GL-WSDB were compared with measurements obtained from field spectrum scanning campaigns at two different locations in Cape Town, South Africa, and was found to be 64% similar.

    Ny radarteknik öppnar nya möjligheter för billig och lättintegrerad upptäckt av människokroppens närvaro. I det här arbetet vill vi göra ett konceptbevis som ersätter "dödmansgreppet" på en elektrisk surfbräda med ett bekvämare trådlöst system baserat på mikroradar.

    För att besvara de identifierade forskningsfrågorna skapades en artefakt. För att vägleda forskningsprocessen och se till att rigorösa metoder används för att konstruera och utvärdera artefakten används forskningsparadigmet Design Science Research i denna avhandling. 

    Resultatet var att radarsignalen försämras fullständigt utan radom när radarn är våt. Med en radome är signalstyrkan en tredjedel våt jämfört med torr. Därför krävs en radome för att skydda radarn och dess funktion från väder och vind. Behovet av blockaddetektering definierades också. Genom att observera hur den direkta läckagesignalen avviker från sitt normala tillstånd kan man avgöra om sensorn är blockerad. Flera algoritmer utvecklades och justerades för att bevisa konceptet. Täckning och detektionshastighet testades och optimerades. På det hela taget ser mikroradarns potential att ersätta dödmansgrepp på en surfbräda mycket lovande ut.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper, we developed a power line communication (PLC) system design, power measurement sensor design, light sensor design, temperature sensor design, and the integration of these components into an advanced sensor network to allow for energy metering and environment monitoring. A power measurement sensor was implemented through a current and voltage sensing circuitry was interfaced multi-plug power adapter to allow for non-invasive measurement of power usage of appliances. The sensors produce signals corresponding to the drawn voltage and current, which are then sampled and processed to estimate power usage. The PLC communications operated at an average accuracy of 95%. The power measurement sensor had an accuracy of 92%, which made it appropriate for home user estimations. The light sensor had an accuracy of between 91-97%, which was suitable for home lighting measurement.

    Open science aims to improve research accessibility, replicability, and consequently its quality. Empirical software engineering entails both data and artifacts, which may be shared more or less openly, to support transparency. However, the trade-offs involved in balancing the openness against integrity and secrecy concerns need methodological guidance. Aim. We aim to derive such advice, based on our own experiences from a research project, in the field of gaze-assisted code reviews – the Gander case. Method. We draw on literature about open data and artifacts in socio-technical research. Next, we describe our case project and derive a conceptual framework of steps in research data analysis and artifact development, using our data and artifacts as illustrating examples. Results. The conceptual framework contains 1) a categorization of humans involved as participants and their concerns, 2) four steps for data analysis, each resulting in corresponding data and meta-data, and 3) three steps of artifact distribution, matching different levels of openness. We derive a preliminary set of recommendations for open science practices for data and artifacts. Conclusion. The conceptual framework has proven useful in summarizing and discussing data and artifacts in the studied case project. We envision that the framework and recommendations will provide a foundation for further advancement of open science research practices in empirical, socio-technical software engineering.

    Abstract [en]

    Forecasting in financial markets is challenging due to the inherent randomness of financial data sources and the vast number of factors that affect the market trends. Thus, it is essential to find informative elements within the vast number of available factors to enhance the performance of the predictive models in such a vital context. This makes the feature selection process an integral part of the financial prediction. In this paper, we propose a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm to reduce the number of features employed to predict the yearly performance of the US stock market. The primary idea is to select a smaller set of features with the slightest similarity and the best prediction accuracy. In this practice, we have utilized genetic algorithm, XGBoost and correlation in order to obtain a more diverse set of features which increases the performance. Experiential results show that our proposed approach is able to reduce the number of features significantly while maintaining comparable prediction accuracy.
