Humorous Storytelling in Social Media Marketing : A Mixed-Methods Research of Consumer Attitudes and Engagement (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines how humorous storytelling in social media advertising affects consumers’ attitudes toward brands, as well as how the boundary between entertainment and advertising is perceived in digital media flows. The study is based on the idea that social media is characterized by rapid information flows and intense competition for users’ attention, which has made storytelling and humor important strategies in digital marketing. The aim is to create a deeper understanding of how people experience and interpret humorous storytelling and how this type of content affects attention, engagement, and brand attitudes.

The study was conducted using a mixed-methods approach consisting of a survey with 292 valid responses and 14 semi-structured interviews. This combination enables both a broad overview of respondents’ attitudes and a deeper understanding of their experiences and interpretations. The results are analyzed using Narrative Transportation Theory and the Elaboration Likelihood Model to examine how stories, humor, and the technical environments of social media influence how advertising is noticed and processed.

The results show that humorous storytelling is generally perceived more positively than traditional advertising on social media. Humor and storytelling contributed to users watching advertisements for a longer time, experiencing higher engagement, and more easily remembering both the content and the brand behind the advertisement. The study also shows that entertainment value plays an important role in how advertising is evaluated and that positive experiences of the content are often connected to a more positive attitude toward both the advertisement and the brand.

The results also show that humorous storytelling can make the boundary between advertising and entertainment less clear. This is because advertisements are sometimes integrated in a way that makes them initially perceived as ordinary or entertaining content rather than marketing. At the same time, many participants emphasized the importance of clearly identifying advertising content. The study also shows that credibility is influenced by how well the humor, the story, and the brand are perceived to fit together. When the humor is perceived as natural and relevant, the advertisement can contribute to a more positive image of the brand, while exaggerated or forced humor risks reducing the perception of credibility.
