Abstract

Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka hur heterosexuella kvinnor med erfarenhet av ofrivillig barnlöshet beskriver sexualitet och partnerrelationer i relation till samhälleliga normer kring reproduktion och (kvinnlighet). Studien har en kvalitativ ansats och utgår från ett socialkonstruktivistiskt perspektiv. 

Det empiriska materialet bestod av semistrukturerade individuella intervjuer med sju heterosexuella cis-kvinnor med erfarenhet av ofrivillig barnlöshet. Intervjuerna utgick från en intervjuguide baserad på studiens syfte och frågeställningar. Materialet analyserades genom tematisk analys med hjälp av teorin om sexuella script, samt begreppet sexual compliance.

Resultatet visar att erfarenheten av ofrivillig barnlöshet utgör en komplex och påfrestande livssituation som påverkar kvinnors sexualitet, sexuella välmående och partnerrelationer på flera nivåer. Studien visar vidare att ofrivillig barnlöshet inte enbart kan förstås utifrån ett biologiskt perspektiv, utan även behöver förstås i relation till sociala och samhälleliga normer kring reproduktion, moderskap och kvinnlighet. Detta synliggjordes genom ett barnalstringsscript som illustrerar hur kvinnors erfarenheter formas i ett samspel mellan intrapsykiska, interpersonella och kulturella processer.

Studien synliggör därmed behovet av ett normkritiskt perspektiv för att förstå hur kvinnors erfarenheter av infertilitet påverkas av samhälleliga föreställningar om reproduktion, sexualitet och kvinnlighet, samt hur dessa normer kan få konsekvenser för kvinnors sexuella välmående och relationella välbefinnande.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate how heterosexual women with experiences of involuntary childlessness describe sexuality and partner relationships in relation to societal norms surrounding reproduction and womanhood. The study has a qualitative approach and is grounded in a social constructionist perspective.

The empirical material consisted of semi-structured individual interviews with seven heterosexual cisgender women with experiences of involuntary childlessness. The interviews were based on an interview guide designed in relation to the study’s aim and research questions. The material was analysed through thematic analysis using Sexual Script theory, as well as the concept of sexual compliance.

The findings show that experiences of involuntary childlessness constitute a complex and emotionally demanding life situation that affects women’s sexuality, sexual well-being, and partner relationships on multiple levels. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that involuntary childlessness cannot solely be understood from a biological perspective, but must also be understood in relation to social and societal norms surrounding reproduction, motherhood, and womanhood. This was illustrated through a procreative script, which demonstrates how women’s experiences are shaped through an interaction between intrapsychic, interpersonal, and cultural processes.

The study therefore highlights the importance of a norm-critical perspective in understanding how women’s experiences of infertility are influenced by societal notions of reproduction, sexuality, and womanhood, as well as how these norms may affect women’s sexual and relational well-being.
