Patients' Experiences of Living with an Intestinal Stoma : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Valda artiklar analyserades enligt Popenoes analysmetod.

Abstract [en]

Background: The number of people living with an enterostomy has increased, resulting in physical, psychological and social challenges for patients. In order for nurses to provide high-quality, person-centered care and support patients in self- care, a deeper understanding of how life with an enterostomy is experienced by patients is required. Aim: The aim of this literature review was to investigate patient experiences of living with an intestinal stoma. Method: A literature review based on ten qualitative studies. Data were collected from the CINAHL and PubMed databases and were quality reviewed using the SBU review template. The selected articles were analyzed using Popenoe’s method of analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in four categories: Physical challenges, Psychological and emotional challenges, Daily life and social challenges, Management, self-care and support. A total of ten subcategories were identified within these categories. Conclusion: Prominent findings in the result were psychological and social challenges such as isolation, anxiety, fear of how others would react and the need for support. Patients also described a lack of information and support from healthcare. To promote the well-being of the patient, nurses should have knowledge of stoma care and provide person-centered care.
