Abstract [en]

Research has shown that mHealth applications can prevent inactivity, but the discontinuationrates are high. The absence of ease of use, or perceived inaccuracy may be the reason. Theobjective of this thesis is twofold: investigate measured and -perceived accuracy and usabilityof three (3) smartphone applications for physical activity tracking, as well as understandingthe users’ thoughts about the relationship between accuracy and usability. Fourteen (14) healthy adults conducted a test walking 150m, recording both distance and step count usingthe applications. Participants then completed an adapted version of MAUQ. Semi-structured interviews were done with six (6) participants. The results indicated that the applications accurately recorded step count, but not distance. The applications were generally perceived as accurate, but it was not something on top of the participants’ minds unless given a reason. 2/3 application was considered usable, and good usability ratings correlated with the presence of factors that have been previously known to influence continued use. Users often prioritized usability over accuracy, not because accuracy was not important, but because good usability was considered a prerequisite for further use. Poor usability could negatively impact trust in the application's ability to perform accurate recording, making it useless as trust in the ability to fulfill the purpose [tracking activity] was important. The themes found in this thesis should be confirmed in a bigger population, and increased transparency in how the applications process data could help better understand what influences accuracy.
