Nursing Measures for Existential Suffering in Patients with Palliative Care : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: Existential suffering is a complex dimension of suffering that is often experienced by patients receiving palliative care. The discomfort experienced pertains to concerns, including the search for meaning in life, the inevitability of death, and the profound sense of isolation. Conventional medical interventions often prove ineffective in addressing these profound challenges. The nurse plays a pivotal role in the identification and management of patients' existential suffering through person-centred care. However, research indicates a tendency to overlook existential suffering in clinical care, with nurses often reporting feelings of inadequacy in their preparation to manage such suffering. Aim: The objective of the literature review was to collate nursing interventions for existential suffering in patients receiving palliative care. Method: The present study was conducted as a literature review, adopting a qualitative approach. Twelve articles of a qualitative nature were included in the study and subjected to qualitative content analysis. Results: The study identified three primary categories: The following processes are involved: listening to the unspoken and reading between the lines, building relationships and trust, and interpreting and understanding. A comprehensive review of the literature revealed that nursing interventions, including active listening, affirmation, presence, humour, and conversations, were found to be central in alleviating patients' suffering. Conclusion: The study shows that the nurse's active listening, emotional and non-verbal presence is crucial to alleviate existential suffering, promote trust and create a therapeutic environment in which the patient can express deep feelings, find comfort and meaning at the end of life.
