The Art of Creating Difference : A Postcolonial Text Analysis of The Paradigm of Difference in Swedish State Founded Dance (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The thesis is titled The Art of Creating Difference - A Postcolonial Text Analysis of The Paradigm of Difference in Swedish State Founded Dance and is written by Minoo Eneroth. The purpose is, based on the theoretical concept of the Paradigm of Difference (de los Reyes & Martinsson 2005), to critically analyze how essentialist notions of difference and culture are both reproduced and challenged within the Swedish cultural sphere. The study is a thematic text analysis of the communication surrounding the dance project SWOP, which is led by Skånes Dansteater.
The essay demonstrates how SWOP both reflects and challenges established discourses on difference. The study finds that SWOP tends to reinforce notions within the Paradigm of Difference by presenting an essentialist understanding of difference, where the identity category of “migrant” represents diversity and the Other. At the same time, a counter-discourse emerges within the project, where difference is seen as a construction of subjective experiences and perceptions. Furthermore, SWOP’s alternative representations of borders, which challenge colonial and essentialist understandings of borders, could represent a discourse that challenges The Paradigm of Difference.
