SOCIAL EXCLUSION : THE IMPORTANCE OF STRUCTURAL AND RELATIONAL FACTORS- A QUANTITATIVE SECONDARYANALYSIS (English)
Abstract [en]
Social exclusion is a complex societal issue that affects individuals’ living conditions, health, and opportunities for participation. Previous research shows that exclusion can manifest bothobjectively, such as lack of resources and participation, and subjectively, feelings ofloneliness. This study aims to investigate how social exclusion is experienced amongrespondents in Sweden and analyze how demographic, structural, and relational factorsinfluence the degree of exclusion. The focus is on examining how these factors interact andaffect the risk of social marginalization. The study is based on a quantitative secondary analysis of the ISSP 2017 survey, includingresponses from 1125 individuals in Sweden. Regression analysis was conducted using thesoftware Jamovi. Three outcome variables were used: perceived loneliness, social contact, and social participation. The results show that social exclusion is influenced by bothstructural factors (such as low income, low education, and poor health) and relational factorslike lack of close contact and emotional support. While structural conditions shape thebroader risk, relational factors are more directly linked to the lived experience of exclusion. The conclusion is that social work should be shaped by a holistic understanding that includesboth structural and relational dimensions. By understanding how different factors interact, social work can help prevent and reduce social exclusion. Theories by Pierre Bourdieu andRuth Levitas are used as analytical frameworks to interpret the findings in a broader socialand political context.
