Digitalization and AI in the real estate industry : A qualitative study on the impact of digitalization and AI on the real estate industry (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of digitalization and AI on the real estate brokerage industry. How this affects future business tasks and the industry itself. The study also aims to see if the competence requirements will change in line with the digital development. Will digitalization and AI replace job roles or create new tasks for real estate agents? This study investigates this through a qualitative approach. Through the qualitative study, a total of six semi-structured interviews have been conducted with three different professional associations such as industry organization, IT experts and real estate agents, all respondents with solid experience in their industry. Based on the respondents´answers together with the theoretical framework, they provide assistance for the analysis and the results of the study. After the analysis, the final discussion and conclusions of the study are presented. The study concludes that AI is unlikely to replace real estate agents, although it will change the profession by acting as a complement. It is not probable that AI will create new tasks, merely that real estate agents will need to adapt to its development. New competence requirements will be set for real estate agents, but as long as people value personal contact, the importance of customer relationships will not change. In closing, suggestions for further research are presented, including clarifying how reasonable the implementation of AI is from an economic and legal perspective. Another suggestion is to study in more depth the acceptance of real estate agents to work more digitally, or the perspective of sellers and buyers from a more digital business compared to a more traditional one.
