Abstract [en]
Roots of Change is an educational game prototype designed to simulate the complexities ofenvironmental management by immersing players in decision-making scenarios involving diversestakeholder perspectives. Built around a branching narrative system, dynamic dialogue with variabletracking, and a time-sensitive day cycle, the game challenges players to balance environmental, social, and economic considerations. Influenced by titles such as Crusader Kings III, Yes, Your Grace, and Djuphavsjakten, the game integrates strategic decision-making with pedagogical goals inspiredby James Paul Gee’s learning principles. A playtesting study was conducted with university studentsusing an online survey approach to evaluate user experience, self-perceived learning, and knowledgeretention. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative feedbackunderwent thematic and sentiment analysis. Future iterations aim to add additional scenarios andenhance visual feedback, further supporting the game’s role as a research-based pedagogical toolaligned with Lund University’s Mistra BIOPATH initiative.
