Concepts for a song are often fuzzy in the beginning of the composition process and composers have been observed using sketches to visualize and think through ideas. Many researchers and designers have explored the use of digital tools to support musicians in their composition practice. Using a Research Through Design approach, this thesis follows the development of two touch & stylus interfaces meant to help musicians in the early stages of composition. The prototypes are assessed with participant observations and the results are analyzed to formulate three recommendations for fellow designers.
