Populist Rhetoric in the Swedish Party Leaders’ Debate : An Analysis of the Final Debates 2010–2018 (English)
Abstract [en]

This study examines the presence and development of populist rhetoric in Swedish party leaders’ debates ahead of the national elections in 2010, 2014, and 2018. Through a combination of critical discourse analysis and narrative analysis, the study investigates linguistic expressions and narrative structures that characterize populist communication. The theoretical framework is based on key scholars such as Mudde, Moffitt, and Müller, and populism is operationalized through four core components: anti-elitism, crisis rhetoric, anti-pluralism, and appeals to the people. The results show that populist rhetoric appears to varying degrees among several party leaders but is most clearly present in the rhetoric of the Sweden Democrats. At the same time, the study finds that traditional parties have increasingly adopted populist elements, particularly through emotionally charged language and confrontational speech. Between 2010 and 2018, the rhetoric in the debates has become more polarized and focused on conflict rather than substantive policy. The study thus highlights how populism, as a rhetorical style, has become an increasingly established part of the Swedish political debate.
