Abstract [en]
The purpose of this study is to examine Black Youths’ experiences with policing in Stockholm, with the aim to see if the experiences shape their trust in law enforcement, through conducting semi-structured interviews with six Black youths built on the Critical Race theory, Generalized trust theory, as well as the Intersectionality approach. The results reveal that the interviewed youths often experience being stopped by the police during regular day to day activities, being racially profiled as well as being overall unfairly treated by the police in Stockholm. The personal encounters bring forth the feeling of mistrust, fear and skepticism surrounding the law enforcement, and throughout the study, it comes to light that different aspects further configuring the encounters, is the intersection of race together with gender, class and religion. Many of the participants experienced these encounters as emotional, leading to negative psychological consequences. Due to the history of unfair policing, the study shows how there is intergenerational trauma that conditions parents to having dialogues with their children concerning how to act when encountering the police, continuing on with the participants carrying on the practice to their younger family members. The study puts light to the need of the police authority showing justice and fairness to all.
