Abstract [en]
The phenomenon of voluntary work and the aspects of volunteer motivation and commitment is a significant theoretical and practical matter. The motivation for engaging in voluntary work is crucial to understand to best ensure continued commitment in organisations, as well as positive experiences for the individual volunteer. The thesis has aimed to examine the experiences of volunteer engagement, motivation and commitment. The thesis takes on an exploratory and inductive approach, to centre the experiences and understandings of the volunteers. This is done through the qualitative method of in-depth interviews, followed by a thematic analysis. The study concluded that volunteers experience a mix of motivational factors, both intrinsically and extrinsically oriented. Furthermore, the study found that social relationships within the organisation is highly valued by volunteers, and to some extent the relational commitment exceeds the commitment to the organisation. The volunteers also expressed a significant valuing of the cause of the organisation, framed as affective commitment. The volunteers view the possibility of ending their commitment when they no longer personally gain something from the work as legitimate.
