Syftet med studien är att studera hur tandläkarstudenter reflekterar kring centrala endodontiska frågeställningar efter införandet av tröskelbegrepp inom grundutbildningen i endodonti för att undersöka om tröskelbegreppen indirekt, eller direkt, återspeglas i resonemangen. En analys genomfördes med hjälp av Systematic Text Condensation. Trettio tentamenssvar från studenter på 5:e terminen (höstterminen 2020) analyserades och fyra huvudteman identifierades: Barriärfunktion och rollen i pulpans försvar, Inflammation och infektion i pulpa samt omgivande vävnader, Kliniska tillvägagångssättet vid endodontisk diagnostik och Detaljer. Huvudteman delades sedan ytterligare in i subteman. Resultaten påvisade att studenterna resonerade väl kring de centrala begreppen samt uppvisade en god förståelse för innebörden av tröskelbegreppen. Däremot noterades det att en del av studenterna lade ett större fokus på detaljer utan att se helheten som i sin tur kan innebära att de saknar en djupare förståelse av ämnet. Studien belyser behovet av ytterligare studier för att få en bättre förståelse för hur tröskelbegreppen påverkar studenternas kunskapsutveckling inom den fortlöpande utvecklingen av området.

The aim of this study was to explore how dental students reflected about central endodontic questions after the introduction of threshold concepts within the endodontic education, to discover whether threshold concepts were indirectly or directly reflected within their arguments. An analysis was conducted of thirty exam answers by students in the fifth term during the fall semester 2020 using Systematic Text Condensation. Four main themes were identified: Barrier functions and their role in the pulp defense, Inflammation and infection in the pulp and surrounding tissues, Clinical approach to endodontic diagnostics and Details. These main themes were then further divided into subthemes. The results showed that the students reflected well on the central concepts of endodontics and showed a good understanding of the meaning of threshold concepts. However, it was noted that some students focussed on the details without seeing the bigger picture, which in turn may result in a lack of deeper understanding on subject matter. The study showed that there is a need for further studies to get a better understanding of how threshold concepts influence the students' development within the ongoing advancements of the field.
