Abstract [en]

Metacognition is the awareness and regulation of one’s cognitive processes. It plays an important role in academic success. However, the increasingly widespread incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to educational practices can lead to a dependence on technology and metacognitive laziness, which hinders the ability to self-regulate and engage meaningfully in learning. Technology is not inherently good or bad. It is how it is used that makes the difference. This paper reports on an ongoing study aimed at enhancing metacognitive skills through the use of an AI agent called “Reflective Guide”. This tool was created using Microsoft Copilot. It poses questions to foster planning, monitoring, and evaluating. It represents an example of a way in which AI agents can create personalized learning experiences that support metacognitive processes.
