Youth delinquency is an increasing concern in the modern world. One aspect of preventative work is psychosocial support for children and youth; however, there are many barriers that inhibit therapeutic adherence, effect and participation. This study examined the experiences of support seeking among 13 caregivers in Sweden, the barriers they faced and how these barriers affected the therapeutic process. The study utilised semi-structured interviews and reflexive thematic analysis. The results showed that common barriers were poor therapeutic alliance, long wait times and intervention inconsistency; problems navigating bureaucratic channels, feelings of blame and isolation, and caregiver fatigue. These barriers affected therapeutic effect and participation willingness. The results provide insight into areas of improvement for psychosocial support services in Sweden, proposing holistic, multi-dimensional interpersonal and practical support for families in psychosocial care. Improving support services for vulnerable families will benefit prevention among children and youth.
