Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att systematiskt granska publicerad litteratur för att sammanställa samt värdera hur tröskelbegrepp påverkar studenternas upplevelser inom medicinska utbildningar.

Material och metod: Denna studie genomfördes utifrån PRISMA riktlinjer 2020. Litteratursökning med fritextsökning utfördes 2024-02-28 i följande databaser: PubMed, CINAHL och ERIC (EBSCO). Screening utfördes separat av skribenterna till denna studie. Inkluderade artiklar genomgick en kvalitetsbedömning utifrån en granskningsmall framtagen av Statens beredning för medicinsk och social utvärdering (SBU).

Resultat: Litteratursökning resulterade i 707 artiklar varav endast fyra inkluderades i denna studie. De inkluderade artiklarna undersöker hur tröskelbegrepp påverkar studenternas upplevelser med fokus på tröskelbegreppets karakteristiska särdrag.

Slutsats: Denna systematiska översikt lyfter fram tröskelbegreppets centrala roll inom lärandeprocesser genom att det fungerar som ett verktyg för att överkomma hinder och främja nya tankesätt. De inkluderade studierna identifierar fem återkommande särdrag för tröskelbegrepp som studenter ofta upplever: troublesome, liminal, transformative, integrative och irreversible.

Aim: The aim of this study is to systematically review published literature in order to evaluate how threshold concepts affect students’ experiences in medical education.

Material and methods: This study is conducted based on the PRISMA 2020 statement. A free-text search was performed 2024-02-28 in the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL and ERIC (EBSCO). Screening was performed separately by the authors of this study. The quality of the included articles was assessed using a review template developed by Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Assessment of Social Services (Statens beredning för medicinsk och social utvärdering, SBU). 

Result: The literature search resulted in 707 articles, of which only four were included in this study. These four articles examine how threshold concept affect students’ experiences by focusing on the characteristic features of threshold concept. 

Conclusion: This study highlights the central role of threshold concept in learning processes by acting as a tool to overcome obstacles and foster new ways of thinking. The included studies identify five characteristic features of threshold concept that students often experience: troublesome, liminal, transformative, integrative and irreversible.
