“The Reason behind the Desperate Action is Unknown” : Suicide Reporting in Aftonbladet 1850-1950 (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis has been to research how the swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported on suicide during the years 1850-1950 and if the medicalisation process of suicide happening during the 19th and 20th century was visible in the source material. By using a content analysis a study has been done on what information the newspaper provided about the suicide, which suicides they reported on, in what words they wrote about them, and whatt he newspaper stated as the reason to why the suicide was committed and whether there was a medicalised explanation for the action. The results show that much information was given on the suicide, the person who had killed themself, and how. There was a development from local suicides being the main focus in the newspaper to an increase in national and international cases during the period. Neutral words were mainly used when reporting, with positive ones being slightly more applied during the earlier years. A diverse range of causes were stated as the background for the suicides, psychological reasons being one of the biggest categories. There was not an increase in using medicalised causes as an explanation, and therefore a medicalisation was not seen in how Aftonbladet portrayed the reason behind suicide. However there was a medicalisation in the language used to describe the psychological causes that played into the suicide, with the words being used becoming more medical over time.
