This chapter traces the videoludic significance of color through the history of game technologies and design practices and explores the consequences for game aesthetics, player emotion, and embodiment. Color in games is a complex visual phenomenon and has been analyzed in game studies literature through theories of color symbolism, research on game designers’ attitudes toward color, and empirical experiments on the emotional effects of color in custom game segments. Ultimately, we can grasp the power of color in games by looking at the way in which specific games link color to gameplay emotion.
