From entertainment to danger : A study about gaming and gaming disorder (English)
Abstract [en]
This thesis examines the phenomenon of gaming disorder (GD) and internet gaming disorder (IGD), with a focus on social, psychological, and health-related factors. The studys aim is to highlight both the risk factors that may contribute to the development of GD/IGD and the potential positive aspects of gaming. The starting point is a systematic literature review of research from 2010 to 2024. The study identifies factors such as stress, ADHD, social isolation, and family structure as risk factors for problematic gaming behavior. Furthermore, the differences between diagnostic criteria according to DSM-5 and ICD-11 are discussed, along with how these affect the understanding of the phenomenon. The positive aspects of gaming, such as improved cognitive abilities, social support, and cultural exchange, are presented as a counterbalance to the negative effects. The results emphasize the importance of a balanced view of gaming, where both risks and benefits are considered. The theoretical framework of the study includes ecological systems theory and symbolic interactionism, allowing for a deeper understanding of the factors influencing an individual's gaming behavior. The conclusions underline the need for further research to develop more nuanced treatment strategies and preventive measures within social work.
