WELCOME TO THE TEXTILE REALM: WHEN “HERE, THEN” MEETS “THERE, NOW”: A case study of communication for development through the representation of female factory workers

Abstract [en]

This thesis explores communication for development and social change in a small community in the Global North. This community historically had a wealthy textile history, which still is strong today. Historically, men ran the factories and women worked in them. Today, much of the production is made in the Global South under similar conditions. This thesis makes use of a common comparison of “here, then” (the community historically) and “there, now” (production countries in the Global South), to look at themes and narratives of female factory workers in the community historically, and in Bangladesh today. The results show that this comparison can be seen both as a way of Othering, but also as a form of creating kinship – as a sort of communication for development and social change. Further, it shows that challenging the historical narrative of this community can be a sort of communication for development and social change as well.
