In this study, we examine how the media describe and portray civilian casualties during two specific events: the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the attack on Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza. Through a discourse analysis of articles from The Jerusalem Post, Al Jazeera, and Dagens Nyheter, this study analyzes how these media outlets describe and portray the events and the civilian casualties involved. The study utilizes theoretical frameworks such as framing theory and representation theory to understand and discuss how different narratives and framings are used to describe and portray the events and civilian casualties. The results indicate differences in the description and portrayal of the events and civilian casualties depending on the media's geographical affiliation. With a particular focus on the use of language and visual symbols such as images, the study highlights how media portrayal can shape public perception of events. Furthermore, the study discusses how the media use various narrative framings and theories of representation, which can enhance or diminish the emotional aspects of the reporting. This analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of the media's role in conflict portrayal.
