In Vivo Plaque Accumulation on Three Different Implant Surfaces

Abstract [en]

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of implantoplasy in reducing biofilm formation on implant surfaces compared to implants with either a turned or moderately rough surface using a quantitative biofilm analysis. 

Material and method: Sixty titanium implants with 3 different surfaces [i.e., turned surface (TS), modified surface (MS), and implantoplasty-modified surface (IP)] were used for producing individual mouth splints for 10 participants. Each participant received a splint containing 6 implants (2 TS, 2 MS, 2 IP). The implants were placed randomly in 1 out of 3 positions, i.e., mesial, central, or distal, on the left and right site of the splint. The participants wore the splint continuously for 3 days. The accumulated biofilm on the implants was evaluated quantitatively using crystal violet biofilm quantification method.

Results: Ten participants, 4 females and 6 males with the age ranging from 23 to 57 years (mean age: 29.8 years), were included. Implants with IP accumulated a significant lower amount of biofilm after 3 days of intraoral exposure compared to both other groups, i.e., implants with TS and MS. 

Conclusion: Based on the data from this study, the assumption that implantoplasty reduces biofilm accumulation on implant surfaces is confirmed. However, the clinical significance on the long term remains to be determined and further research is needed to amplify the efficacy of implantoplasty as a treatment method for peri-implantitis.

Syfte: syftet med denna studie är att utvärdera effekten av implantoplastik på biofilm ackumulering genom att jämföra plackansamling på olika implantat med olika ytmodifikationer; Slät, modifierad och implantoplastikbehandlad yta med hjälp av en kvantitativ biofilm analys.

Material och metod: Sextio titan implantat med tre olika ytmodifikationer (slät yta, modifierad yta och implantoplastikbehandlad yta) användes för att framställa individuellt anpassade skenor för 10 deltagare. Varje deltagare blev utdelad en skena bestående av 6 implantat splintade till buckalytan (2 MS, 2 TS och 2 IP). Implantaten placerades i en av tre positioner (mesial, central, distal) med en av varje typ på varsin sida med hjälp av en randomiseringslista. Deltagarna använde essixskenan kontinuerligt i 3 dagar för att tillåta biofilmackumulering. Sedan skedde en kvantitativ analys av biofilmackumuleringen genom crystal violet quantification method.  

Resultat: 10 deltagare, 4 kvinnor och 6 män med ålderintervall 23-57 år, deltog i studien. IP behandlade implantat visade en signifikant mindre mängd biofilm jämfört med TS- och RS implantat.  

Konklussion: Resultatet visar att implantoplastik reducerar biofilm ackumulering på implantatytor. Dock krävs mer forskning för att fastställa metodens effektivitet som en behandlingsmetod av peri-implantit både kortsiktigt och långsiktigt
