Abstract [en]
This research paper compares online news coverage of the first ten days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in Bulgarian media in 2022. The study examines the news headlines of articles from the news websites of three major Bulgarian media outlets, BSTV (Bulgarian Free Television), Svobodnaevropa/RFE BG (Bulgaria’s service for Radio Free Europe), and BNR (Bulgarian National Radio), using a mix of content analysis and framing analysis to uncover differences in news reporting among the websites. The paper's theoretical framework covers news framing and media representation theories. The study indicates that the online news coverage of the initial stage of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine in Bulgarian media employs different terminology and frames towards the studied event. The key findings indicate that BSTV's headlines portrayed a more neutral framing, potentially influenced by the affiliation of the Bulgarian Socialist Party with Russia. At the same time, RFE BG portrayed the Russian invasion of Ukraine with strong language, emphasising the human impact and political differences. On the other hand, BNR took a multifaceted approach, focusing on economic consequences and Bulgarian political figures. The results of this study point out that the media system and political backdrops continue to play an important influence in framing the news in Bulgarian online media.
