Under det senaste seklet har det utifrån ett globalt perspektiv skett en urbanisering från landsbygden till större tätorter/städer. Detta har gjort att städerna utökas och stadsstrukturer har varit väsentliga verktyg för att upprätthålla en väl hållbar stadsutveckling. Att finna en korrelation mellan de tre primära hållbarhetsaspekterna, social, ekonomisk och ekologisk hållbarhet, visar studien har varit utmanande för stadsplanering. Studiens syfte är att bidra med ökad förståelse kring hur utvecklingen av stadsstrukturer behandlar FN:s hållbarhetsmål och vilken roll de teoretiska stadsidealen har under den praktiska planeringsprocessen för Öresundsregionen med Köpenhamns stadsplan "Fingerplanen" som ett centralt ämne. Studien undersöker även vilka paralleller det finns mellan Köpenhamns stadsideal och den svenska stadsstrukturen i städerna Lund och Malmö. 

Metoden som studien har utgått ifrån är en kvalitativ metod med utgångspunkterna, teoretiskt ramverk baserat på tidigare vetenskapliga artiklar som berör studiens syfte och semistrukturerade intervjuer med stadsplanerare inom Öresundsregionen. Studiens slutsats visar att Köpenhamns fingerplan har varit bidragande till att staden har fått en god infrastruktur samt kommunikationssystem, men att risken finns att fingerplanens urbana linjer ökar på bredden, vilket bidrar till att planens grundprinciper försvinner och att transportsystemet överbelastas. 

Vidare finns det parallella jämförelser att dra mellan att Lund-Malmö kan till viss del ses som ett finger i korrelation till Köpenhamns fingerplan med sina fem fingrar. Båda sidorna av Öresund har liknande värderingar inom den praktiska stadsplaneringen och förhåller sig till att goda transportmöjligheter och utrymme för grönområden i stadens delar bidrar till en ökning av samtliga hållbarhetsaspekter. Stadsideal bidrar till riktlinjer för den praktiska stadsutvecklingen, men det politiska läget samt framtidens samhällsproblem baserat på hållbarhet har en övervägande roll under planeringsprocessen.

During the last century the world has been through an urbanization from the countryside to bigger cities. This has caused urban areas to grow in size and different urban structures have been vital tools to develop sustainable cities. Finding a correlation between the three primary sustainable aspects, social, economic and ecological sustainability, has proven to be challenging for urban planning, as shown by the study. The purpose of the study is to contribute with the knowledge of how urban structures develop, and what role these theoretical ideal cities have during the practical planning process with the Öresund Region and Copenhagen's city plan “The Finger Plan” as a central topic. The study also examines what similarities you can find between Copenhagen's city plan and the urban structure of the Swedish cities of Malmö and Lund.

The method in this study has been a qualitative approach based on a theoretical framework derived from previous scientific articles, that research the same subject, as well as semi-structured interviews with city planners within the Öresund Region. The conclusion of the study shows that the city plan of Copenhagen has been contributing to their great infrastructure and communication system. However, there is a risk that the Finger Plan’s urban linear structures widen, which could cause the loss of the plan’s fundamental principles and an overloaded transportational system.

Furthermore, there are some comparisons to be made that Lund-Malmö, could at a certain level, be seen as a single finger based on Copenhagen’s five fingers. Both sides of the Öresund Region have similar values within the practical aspect of urban planning and emphasize that good transportation options and green space in different parts of the city contribute to an increase within every aspect of sustainability. Ideal cities contribute to guidelines for the practical aspect of urban development, however the political situation and  the problems of the future society based on sustainable aspects has a considerable role during the planning process.
