The Nurse´s Experiences of Palliative Care at the End of Life : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The population is getting older and the demand for palliative care places is increasing. Every year 56 million people in the world die, about 60% of them are estimated to need palliative care at the end of life. In Sweden, it is estimated that 70,000 people per year will need palliative care. In this literature study, the focus is on the palliative care that takes place at hospital units except in the palliative care ward.Aim: The purpose of this literature study is to describe the nurse's experiences of caring for people over 18 years who are cared for in hospitals at the end of life. Method: Literature study based on twelve empirical qualitative studies. All articles that corresponded to the purpose and were selected for the literature study have been reviewed and quality assessed according to SBU's guidelines.Result: The nurse finds it tough and challenging but also honorable to work with palliative care. Communication, competence, and emotional impact have been seen as important parts that interact around palliative care. Conclusion: Similarities in how nurses experienced palliative care were seen around the world. It was considered tough, draining but also a big honor to work in the vicinity of death and to be able to care for a patient at the end of life. It was seen that nurses wanted more education in the subject and that supervision and reflection were considered important pieces for the nurses. There was a clear will from the nurses to care for the patient as well as possible according to the patient's own wishes
