Background: Blood borne infections constitute a risk to registered nurses all over the world, mainly through needle stick or sharp injuries in the workplace.
Aim: The aim of the study was to explore nurses´experiences when caring for patients with a known blood-borne infection in Sri Lanka.
Method: For the study a qualitative design was choosen. Semi structured interviews with ten registered nurses from different hospitals in Colombo, Sri Lanka were conducted. The collected data were analyzed with a method by Philip Burnard.
Results: From the analyze three categories appeard: Nurse-Patient relationship, Significance of support and knowledge in providing care, Importance of safety routines. Each category has two to three sub-categories to strengthen the results.
Conclusion:The study gives an insight of how registered nurse feel when caring for patients with blood borne infection. Most of the registered nurses felt secure when using precautions and safety routines and did not treat these patients differently.
