This study investigates whether studying literature in the ESL (English as a Second Language) classroom is beneficial to the process of second-language learning. According to previous research by McKay (1982), who is one of the first linguistic academics to write about literature for second language learning, using literature can be a valuable contribution and resource to second-language learning. Her research in this area indicates that the use of literature and choice of literary genre largely has a positive effect on ESL learners. However, there exists some disagreement among researchers as to whether any advantages of using literature outweighs the disadvantages. In the current study, we explore and provide an overview for the possible advantages and disadvantages of using literature from the perspective of learners and teachers. We also investigate the effectiveness of different genres for facilitating language development for upper secondary students.
