Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Dialysis treatments are available in various forms and can mean major life changes for the patients who are in need of them. Limitations and bindings were factors that patients experienced during dialysis treatments. Feelings such as anxiety and fear were also common in dialysis treatments. How nurses handle the patients' feelings and thoughts was important for how the nursing was perceived by both parties. Aim: The aim of this literature review was to illuminate the nurse's experiences of caring for patients with dialysis. Method: A systematic literature review was used as a method. The literature review followed the SBU approach and consisted of ten qualitative studies. The databases that were used for this study were PubMed and Cinahl. The ten articles were assessed for quality with SBU's review template. The method used to analyze data was content analysis. Result: The result showed the following three main categories: the relationship between patient and nurse, experience of emotional stress and the dialysis machine is a stressor for nurses. And three subcategories: create relationship with the patient, trust in the nurse, stress and inexperienced nurses. The result showed that the nurses experienced that the patient’s nursing needs were identified with the help of a good and caring relationship. A good and caring relationship with the patients meant that the nurses could create a better understanding of the patients' needs and situation. Addressing the patients' thoughts and feelings, was something all nurses experienced could be emotionally stressful. Dialysis machines also created stress among the nurses and were perceived to be time consuming. Conclusion: The conclusion that can be drawn is the importance of good care relationship was another factor that was important in the care of this patient group. Many nurses also felt that they had a lack of knowledge about the dialysis machine and how they would act in emergency situations. The patients' feelings and thoughts were something that nurses often had to face, this could cause emotional stress for the nurses.
