Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The influence of health facility environment on patient’s well-being and recovery was highlighted in the nineteenth century by nurse Florence Nightingale. She advocated the importance of patient’s access to fresh air, sunlight and view over nature during hospitalised. Since patient’s can experience anxiety, stress and emotion of insecurity changes in hospital environment may conduce patient’s well-being. The aim of this literature review was to investigate which importance the health facility environment may have on patient’s well-being and recovery. The results of this review showed that sunlight had a major influence on patient’s recovery. Patient’s access to sunlight, view over nature and a calm atmosphere without noise led to good nights sleep that improved well-being with less pain and stress which conduced to faster recovery and lower medical costs. As a nurse it is important to have knowledge in this area to be able to inform and inspire patients about the good effects of sunlight, nature and art so that patients have the possibility to improve his/hers well-being and recovery. More research in this area is desirable, especially with focus on gender and cultural needs.
