Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Every year, up to 1,500 suicide occurs in Sweden and almost ten times as many makes a suicide attempt. WHO classifies suicide as a public health problem as one million people globally die from suicide every year. The nurse, regardless of the future workplace, will meet these patients and can play a crucial role in the recovery of these patients. The quality of the nursing care can be vital for this group of patients. Previously, much of the research has focused on the nurses’ perspective and with a focus on safety and observations, while there is a knowledge gap regarding important factors in the nursing care from the suicidal patients’ perspective. Aim: To explore what experiences suicidal patients have of nursing care and what factors are experienced as good nursing care to reduce suffering and regain health. Method: A literature study was conducted with content analysis according to Graneheim and Lundman of sixteen peer-reviewed studies with qualitative approach found in the databases CINAHL, PsycINFO and PubMed. Results: The results showed three main categories, each with three subcategories to illustrate which factors in the nursing care the suicidal patients experienced promoted their recovery. The main categories that emerged were the importance of an interpersonal relationship, to experience security and that the nurses showed engagement. Conclusion: The nurse needs to be able to provide good nursing through an interpersonal relationship characterized by empathy, communication, acceptance, respectfulness and accessibility, and thereby instill hope. The good treatment includes aspects such as the nurses active listening, affirmation, commitment, showing empathy and being present.
