Bakgrund: Behovet av kompetenta handledare som ser handledning som en attraktiv arbetsuppgift ökar stadigt allteftersom fler sjuksköterskestudenter går ut för att göra sin VFU. För att få svar på frågan hur stöd och kompetensutveckling för dessa handledare skulle kunna bli bättre behöver kunskap inhämtas om handledares syn på den egna handledarrollen. Syfte: Syftet med studien är att undersöka variationer i sjuksköterskans uppfattning av sin handledande roll. Metod: Semistrukturerade intervjuer med sjuksköterskor som handleder sjuksköterskestudenter på en sjukhusavdelning har genomförts och analyserats med en fenomenografisk ansats. Resultat: Fem olika beskrivningskategorier kunde urskiljas; ”Handledarens vad och hur?” ”Motstånd mot att handleda”, ”Osäkerhet vid handledning”, ”Vad studenten har med sig” och ”Vad handledaren får tillbaka”. Slutsats: Handledares olika uppfattningar om sin roll i handledningsprocessen kan beskrivas på olika sätt och med hjälp av den kunskapen som framkommit kan stödet utvecklas vidare. Background:The needs of competent preceptors who find precepting an attractive work task is steadily increasing as more nursing students make their clinical placement. In order to get an answer to the question how support and competence development for these preceptors’could be better, knowledge needs to be obtained about preceptors’ view on their own precepting role. Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate variations in the nurse's perception of his / her supervisory role. Method: Semi-structured interviews with nurses who precept nursing students at a hospital department have been carried out and analyzed with a phenomenographic approach. Result: Five different description cathegories could be distinguished; ”The preceptors’ what? and how?” ”Uncertainty in preceptoring”, ”Resistance to preceptoring”, ”What the student brings” and ”What the preceptor gets back.” Conclusion: The preceptors different views on their role in the precepting process can be described in different ways and with help of the knowledge that emerged, the support can be further developed.
