Alla människor har säkerligen någon nära anhörig eller bekant som har dött av cancer. Det beräknas att en tredjedel av alla som lever idag kommer att få en cancerdiagnos under sin livstid. Att få cancer innebär att individen plötsligt hamnar i en ny livssituation och måste försöka lära sig att anpassa sig till och hantera denna. De svåra känslor och situationer som kan uppstå vid anpassningen till ett nytt liv bearbetas av individen genom olika copingstrategier. Syftet med litteraturstudien var att belysa vilka copingstrategier individer med obotlig cancer använder i sitt dagliga liv. Metoden som användes för denna litteraturstudie var Goodmans metodologi, för att systematiskt finna och bedöma relevant litteratur. Litteratur söktes i olika databaser och resulterade i nio vetenskapliga artiklar. Resultatet visade att ett flertal copingstrategier användes, både problem- och emotionsfokuserade såsom exempelvis att söka stöd eller information. Dessa var till nytta i hanteringen av livssituationen efter beskedet om obotlig cancer. Avslutningsvis är det viktigt att uppmärksamma vilka copingstrategier som används av individerna. Sjuksköterskan kan då, i enlighet med kompetensbeskrivningen för legitimerade sjuksköterskor möta sjukdomsupplevelse och lidande samt på bästa möjliga sätt ge lindring.

All of us most likely have a relative or a close friend who has died from cancer. It is estimated that one third of the population will get diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. A cancer diagnosis means a sudden changed life situation and a need to adjust and cope with the news of an incurable disease. It is hard to adapt to a new life situation, which involves a number of coping strategies. The purpose of this study was to illustrate which coping strategies people with incurable cancer use in their daily lives. This is important so that nurses can deal with patients and their families in the best possible way. The method used was the Goodman systematic methodology to find and judge relevant literature. The results showed that many people used several coping strategies, both problem- and emotion focused for example search for support or information. These strategies were important when living with incurable cancer. In conclusion, it is important as a nurse to pay attention to the coping strategy that the individual is using. The nurse can then, in accordance with the competencies for registered nurses, meet the needs of the individuals and their families in the most appropriate and comforting ways.
