Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

With a growing proportion of elderly in the population, the number of people suffering from dementia will increase. A large part of them show agitated behaviours which are difficult for their surrounding to cope with. Research shows the dangers when this behaviour is treated with drugs. New non-pharmacological methods need to be developed. The aim of the present literature study was to examine the possible effects of massage in the treatment of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. The results are based on eight quantitative and two qualitative articles. The literature study finds that massage as an intervention can decrease some agitated behaviours, above all physical nonaggressive behaviour, and decrease anxiety and increase relaxation.
