Trots rapporterad uppskattning av daglig verksamhet för dess sociala och psykiska effekter uppvisar deltagare missnöje med att inte få tillräckligt med ekonomisk ersättning för sin sysselsättning. Tidigare forskning har funnit uttryck för en lönearbetesdiskurs bland deltagare i daglig verksamhet. Det uttryckta missnöjet och beskriven lönearbetesdiskurs tas fasta på och bildar utgångspunkten för denna uppsats. Syftet är att undersöka hur deltagare i daglig verksamhet förhåller sig till sin sysselsättning och värdet på den egna aktiviteten i relation till lönearbete. Sju deltagare intervjuades och en kvalitativ tematisering gjordes av materialet. Empirin analyserades med hjälp av Gramscis hegemonibegrepp och Marx arbetsdefinition. Resultaten visar hur deltagare uppvisar ambivalens inför förståelsen av sin sysselsättning som arbete. De sociala och psykologiska effekterna krockar med lönearbetsdiskursen genom det uttryckta behovet av att få ekonomisk ersättning för sin sysselsättning. Trots säkrad inkomst från försäkringssystemet beskrivs behovet att få ekonomisk ersättning för daglig verksamhet som avgörande för deltagarnas uppfattning om den egna sysselsättningens värde. Slutsatsen är att även om en alternativ arbetsdefinition kan skymtas i deltagarnas berättelser trängs denna uppfattning ut av den hegemoniska lönearbetsdiskursen.

Although reports show that participants appreciate Swedish day activity centers for its social and psychological effects, participants also express dissatisfaction with not getting enough financial compensation for their occupation. Previous research has found display of a wage labor discourse among participants in day activity centers. Together, the expressed dissatisfaction and the wage labor discourse form the starting point for this study. The aim for this study is to explore how participants in day activity centers relate to the value of their occupation in relation to wage labor. Seven participants were interviewed and a qualitative thematization was made. The findings were analyzed using Gramsci's concept of hegemony and the definition of work by Marx. The findings demonstrate how participants display ambivalence in their understanding of their occupation as work. The social and psychological effects of the occupation collide with the wage labor discourse through the expressed need for financial compensation for their occupation. Even though the participants’ income is secured through the insurance system, the need for financial compensation through occupation is still described as vital in the participants' perception of the value of their occupation. The conclusion is that, although an alternative definition of work can be seen in the accounts of the participants, this definition gets suppressed by the hegemony of the wage labor discourse.
