Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the project is to investigate how sexologists describe sexual desire and work with it in couple´s therapy. The background is that low desire can be described as a public health problem and the profession of sexology has therefore emerged as an interaction with the increased need for counselling. Seventeen sexologists were interviewed and thematic analysis with system theory as a reference frame was performed. Based on the stories of the sexologists, results show that desire is a relational concept that interacts with existential-, social-, couples- and individual systems. The sexologists' way of working is tailor-made for the patients they meet. They create alliance within the couple and try to harbour the patients' suffering. They reflect on their expert role, working eclectically with theories and methods to assist couples in sexual desire. They help couples through relaxation exercises, sensuality training and communication.
