Syntetiska läkemedel är ett viktigt verktyg för människors hälsa och konsumeras idag i mycket stora kvantiteter. De hamnar i miljön antingen genom att oanvända läkemedel spolas ut i avloppet eller följer med urin och avföring ut ur kroppen. Eftersom läkemedelssubstanser har en biologisk effekt på människan, kan de också ha det på andra levande organismer, och okunskapen om vilka effekter detta kommer att ha på miljön i framtiden är stor. Dock går det redan idag att mäta halter av läkemedel i vattnet, och en viss påverkan på vattenlevande organismer har kunnat påvisas. Därför behövs en ny syn på läkemedel, och användningen därav, där även miljön tas i beaktning. Detta är syftet med en hållbar läkemedelsanvändning. Syftet med uppsatsen är att utveckla detta begrepp, samt att ge en bild av förutsättningarna för en sådan utveckling i Sverige. För att komma fram till det har jag använt mig dels av halvstrukturerade intervjuer med några viktiga aktörer på området, dels textanalys av läkemedelsföretags och Läkemedelsverkets hemsidor. Drivkrafter som har kunnat identifieras är bland annat information och användningen av ekonomiska verktyg. Hinder som har nämnts är exempelvis luddiga miljömål och okunskap om riskerna med läkemedel i miljön.

Pharmaceuticals have become an important tool concerning people’s health and are today widely used. Unfortunately though they leek out into the environment by unused pharmaceuticals being flushed out into waterways, or channelled through the body along with urine and faeces. Bearing in mind their biological effects on humans, pharmaceutical substances might also have similar effects on other living organisms, and regrettably there is a substantial lack of knowledge regarding the impact this might have on the environment in the future. It is however already possible to measure the pharmaceutical content in watercourses and some of its consequential effects on water organisms have been proven. That is why a new approach to pharmaceuticals, and pharmaceutical use, is needed, one where environmental concerns are taken into consideration. This is the purpose of sustainable pharmaceutical use. The intention of this paper is to explore this concept, as well as to illustrate the preconditions for sustainable pharmaceutical use and its development in Sweden. In order to do so, I have carried out half structured interviews with a few important stakeholders, and conducted an analysis of web pages belonging to Pharmaceutical companies and the Pharmaceutical agency. The driving forces that have been identified are for instance using information as away to educate the general public and the manipulation of economical advances and constrains as tools to guide the people into making more environmentally friendly decisions. Impediments that have been mentioned are among others the indistinct environmental goals and the lack of knowledge regarding the risks pharmaceuticals have on the environment.
