Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this essay is to investigate how and if Swedish TV-commercials portrait ethnicity in stereotypical ways. With a combination of both qualitative and quantitative methods, TV-commercials on Swedish channel 3 and 4 were analyzed. The quantitative study examined how frequent ethnic groups where represented in the advertisements, and the qualitative study examined 10 commercials through a semiotic inspired analyze to see if underlying messages were hidden by using the terms stereotypes and “otherness”. The result in the quantitative analyze showed that ethnic groups were highly under-represented: only 6 percent of the investigated advertisements. The results in the qualitative analyze showed that ethnicity more often represented cultural and comedian stereotypes rather than positive stereotypes. My conclusion is that Swedish TV-commercials marginalize and discriminate ethnic groups. Through this representation of ethnic groups, Swedish society makes “the other” invisible, and forces the “others” to participate in visual TV-commercials on “our” conditions.
