Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In this study, using qualitative interviews, we examine how people use vinyl records as a medium to represent their identity, as well as the mutual relations of power that exists in relation to these. We interpret our empirical material with a structuralist approach and try to discern the ways in which our interviewees relate to the vinyl record as medium. Theoretical concepts used in this study includes habitus and social fields, but also representation theory and masculinity theory. The results show that there are several different ways of representing ones identity depending on the relation to vinyl records. These representations are not tied to any specific person but to different types of generalizations that we have been able to discern from our material. With these generalizations, we can also distinguish that various factors such as, gender, assets and culture affect how the person use vinyl records as a medium for representation of their identity.
