Abstract [en]

This chapter illustrates how the Swedish VET trajectories (1945–2015) have been shaped by reforms and negotiations between the state and the labour market organisations. Three distinguished phases are traced. From the end of the 1940s, municipal vocational schools underwent a strong expansion. The second phase began with the establishment of coherent upper secondary schools through a reform in 1971. VET became a part of an integrated education system at upper secondary level. The third phase can be interpreted as a reorientation of the Swedish VET-system. The Swedish homogeneous VET-system tends to be more differentiated and controlled by the industries’ requirements.
