Shaping Artificial Sunlight : A Design Study of How Artificial Light and Shadow can Create Experience of Well-being in Indoor Environments in Dark Climates (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
This thesis explores how artificial sunlight can be shaped through product design
to create experiences of well-being in indoor environments during dark climatic
conditions. The study adopts a user-centered and research-through-design
approach, treating light as an immaterial design material rather than solely a
technical function. Through theories of emotional design, biophilic design, and
environmental psychology, combined with practical light experiments, user testing,
and iterative prototyping, the study investigates which lighting qualities contribute
to the perception of natural sunlight. The findings indicate that the perception of
artificial sunlight is primarily influenced by the direction of light, shadow interplay,
contrast, and spatial presence rather than by light intensity or technical simulation
of daylight alone. The project resulted in a physical lighting product designed to
project sunlight-like phenomena in indoor environments while also functioning as a
conventional lamp. The study contributes knowledge on how artificial light can be
designed as an atmospheric and experiential material within product design.
