The aim of this research project is to explore what child–nature relations are made possible through science education in Swedish preschool practice in the time of the Anthropocene. During the last decades, the tasks and purposes for Swedish preschool have made a shift towards an increased focus on teaching and learning. One of the areas that has been further articulated in the curriculum is science education. Previous research shows how early childhood science education (ECSE) has developed into a practice that entails many possibilities for child–nature relations to form, both through various dimensions like embodiment,aesthetic expressions, play and inquiry, and by facilitating child–nature relations that foster care and empathy towards nature. The notion of the Anthropocene brings new questions in relation to education to the fore: questions on natureculture relations and humans’ responsibility for the wellbeing of this planet, in a time when we need new ways to live and educate with nature. Actor-network theory (ANT) is the methodological stance that is evoked in this research project. By noticing the horse chestnut tree and acknowledging it as a sociomaterial actor, it became an actor to follow into ECSE assemblages. The results describe seven enactments of ECSE: facting, fictioning, gathering, visiting, sensing, exploring and caring, that also produce different child–nature relations. The results also describe how these enactments of ECSE are coordinated within preschool practice, and how local rituals make some child–nature relations possible while others struggle in the margins. This shows how power is located in teaching practices in ways that sometimes hide what is possible for children and pedagogues. It also shows how ECSE is a flexible practice that allows for multiple possibilities to develop and coexist, coordinations that allow for other child–nature relations to emerge and be explored, which is important in the Anthropocene. The results are concluded by presenting a new concept to think with: preschool–naturing.

Syftet med föreliggande forskningsprojekt är att undersöka vilka relationer mellan barn och natur som möjliggörs genom naturvetenskapsundervisning i svensk förskolepraktik i Antropocen. Under de senaste decennierna har uppdraget för den svenska förskolan förskjutits mot ett ökat fokus på undervisning och lärande. Ett område som har förtydligats i läroplanen är naturvetenskap. Tidigare forskning visar att naturvetenskap i förskolan har utvecklats till en praktik som möjliggör många relationer mellan barn och natur, genom kroppslighet, estetiska uttryck, lek, undersökande arbetssätt och relationer som också främjar omsorg och empati för naturen. Begreppet Antropocen aktualiserar nya frågor i relation till utbildning, såsom frågor om natur–kultur-relationer och människans ansvar för planetens välbefinnande i en tid då vi behöver nya sätt att leva och utbilda tillsammans med naturen. Aktör-nätverksteori (ANT) utgör den metodologiska utgångspunkten i detta forskningsprojekt. Genom att uppmärksamma hästkastanjeträdet och erkänna det som en sociomateriell aktör blev det en aktör att följa in i naturvetenskapliga utbildningspraktiker i förskolan. Resultaten beskriver sju göranden av naturvetenskap i förskolan: faktaskapande, fiktionalisering, samlande, besökande, sinneserfarande, utforskande och omsorg, vilka också producerar olika relationer mellan barn och natur. Resultaten visar vidare hur dessa göranden samordnas inom förskolans praktik och hur lokala ritualer möjliggör vissa relationer mellan barn och natur medan andra marginaliseras. Detta synliggör hur makt är lokaliserad i undervisningspraktiker på sätt som ibland döljer vad som är möjligt för barn och pedagoger. Det visaro ckså hur naturvetenskapsundervisning i förskolan är en flexibel praktik som möjliggör att flera olika göranden kan utvecklas och samexistera, samt hur samordningar kan öppna för att andra relationer mellan barn och natur kan uppstå och utforskas, vilket är betydelsefullt i Antropocen. Resultaten avslutas med att presentera ett nytt begrepp att tänka med: preschool–naturing.
