“What we manage to do is what we do now – by the skin of our teeth” : A qualitative interview study of social media communication about youth centres in a municipality (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines how municipal communication about youth centres is shaped and has impactin practice, with focus on youth coaches’s experiences of working with social media alongside theirprimary profession within the municipality of Halmstad. The empirical material consists of fivequalitative interviews with youth coaches, and the study’s theoretical framework drawing onorganizational communication, platformization and sensemaking is used to conduct a thematicanalysis of how different conditions influence the impact of the communication. The result shows that communication on social media is primarily characterized by a transmissionview of communication, which is interpreted as a fact that young people are often not reached bythe messages in a meaningful way. Furthermore, the study indicates that youth coaches find itdifficult to balance their work with communication with municipal requirements and the needs ofyoung people, while time constraints make it challenging to prioritize development and planningactivities. Overall, the finings demonstrate that the communicative impact is low and that socialmedia currently does not contribute to achieving all of the municipality’s goals for the youthcenters function.
