Abstract [sv]

Syftet med arbetet är att beskriva forskningsläget avseende långsiktiga konsekvenser för barn som bevittnar våld i hemmet, med särskilt fokus på vad barn anser vara värdefullt i mötet med den professionella. Ämnet anses relevant eftersom det inte finns tillräckligt med empiriskt material i förhållande till tidigare forskning. Följande frågeställningar har legat till grund för arbetet: vad finns det för konsekvenser för ett barn som bevittnar våld i hemmet och vad har beskrivits vara värdefullt hos barn i möte med den professionella inom socialt arbete? Arbetet genomfördes med en scoping-studie där ett urval av vetenskapliga artiklar och relevant litteratur utgjorde det empiriska materialet. Empirin analyserades utifrån Piagets utvecklingsteori, Goffmans stämplingsteori samt det dramaturgiska perspektivet och begreppet självstigma. Resultatet visar att barn som bevittnar våld i hemmet löper en ökad risk för att utveckla PTSD-symptom, våldsamma beteenden samt en försämrad självbild. Vidare visar resultatet att barn som bevittnar våld i hemmet ofta bär på en tystnad kopplad till skam, rädsla och ansvarstagande, vilket i sin tur försvårar möjligheten att söka hjälp. Samtidigt framkommer det att ett tryggt, tillitsfullt såväl som inkluderande bemötande från professionella kan möjliggöra öppenhet, stärka barnets känsla av hopp och minska självstigma.

Abstract [en]

The aim of this work is to describe the current state of research concerning the long-term consequences for children who witness domestic violence, with particular focus on what children perceive as valuable in their encounters with professionals. The topic is considered relevant due to limited availability of empirical research in relation to existing literature. The work is guided by the following research questions: what long-term consequences may affect children who witness domestic abuse, and what has been described as valuable for children in their encounters with professionals within social work? The study was conducted as a scoping review, in which a selection of scientific and relevant literature constituted the empirical material. The empirical material was analyzed using Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, Goffman’s labeling theory as well as the dramaturgical perspective and the concept of self-stigma. The results indicate that children, who witness domestic violence, are at increased risk of developing PTSD symptoms, violent behaviors, and a diminished self image. Furthermore, the findings also show that these children often carry a silence associated with shame, fear and a sense of responsibility, which in turn hinders their ability to seek help. At the same time, the results show that a safe, trust-worthy, and inclusive approach by professionals can enable openness, strengthen children’s sense of hope, and reduce self-stigma.
