Abstract [en]

This study investigates why elderly people in Sweden may not use BankID to access public services. It also explores how digital authentication methods can be improved to make these services more accessible to them. As society becomes more digital, many essential tasks are now done online. However, this rapid shift has been difficult for some, and elderly individuals are often particularly affected by this digital exclusion worldwide. In Sweden, there is a need for more in-depth research on how BankID specifically affects elderly users' experiences with digital public services and the challenges they encounter. This paper addresses this gap. The study used two main approaches: a review of existing research (literature review) and qualitative semi-structured interviews with individuals aged 65 to 100. The results show specific problems related to BankID, including difficulties with usability, fears about security, and a heavy reliance on support from others. These findings suggest Sweden experiences a similar digital divide among its elderly population as seen elsewhere, influenced by its specific digital systems.
