I Sverige har vi obligatorisk grundskola och en uppfattning om att skolan är viktig för att kunna klara sig senare i livet. Trots detta verkar frånvaron ha ökat under de senaste åren. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur skolkuratorer beskriver problematisk skolfrånvaro och vilka bakomliggande faktorer de anser finns. Vidare syftar studien till att ta reda på vilka hinder och möjligheter skolkuratorerna upplever att det finns med att arbeta främjande och förebyggande med problematisk skolfrånvaro. Jag använder kvalitativa intervjuer för att undersöka hur skolkuratorer arbetar med fenomenet. Resultatet av denna studie visar att skolkuratorer uppfattar problematisk skolfrånvaro som komplext. De tror att det sällan finns en orsak, utan att det oftast finns flera bakomliggande faktorer. Det innebär att dem behöver ha ett brett perspektiv i mötet med eleverna. Det främjande och förebyggande arbetet bedrivs främst genom att skapa goda relationer, välfungerande samverkan, rutiner och en anpassad skolmiljö. För att analysera resultatet använder jag Bronfenbrenners (1979) utvecklingsekologiska teori. Teorin används för att illustrera interaktionen mellan orsakerna bakom problematisk skolfrånvaro.

In Sweden we have mandatory elementary school and a perception that school is important for being able to cope later in life. Despite this, absences seem to have increased in recent years. The purpose of this study is to investigate how school counselors describe problematic school absence and what underlying factors they believe exist. Furthermore, the study aims to find out what obstacles and opportunities school counselors perceive to exist in working to promote and prevent problematic school absence. I use qualitative interviews to investigate how school counselors work with the phenomenon. The results of this study show that school counselors perceive problematic school absence as complex. They believe that there is rarely one cause, but that there are usually several underlaying factors. This means that they need to have a broad perspective when meeting with the students. The promotional and preventive work is carried out primarily by creating good relationships, well-functioning cooperation, routines and an adapted school environment. To analyse the results, I use Bronfenbrenner´s (1979) developmental ecological theory. The theory is used to illustrate the interaction between the causes behind problematic school absence.
